Summary

Rudolf never stops to notice the lovely bluebells that grow outside his home, or the dazzling stars in the night sky. All he can do is complain. When Rudolph discovers that he has a magical glass godfather who can provide him with endless riches, he thinks that his troubles are over. But when getting everything that he always wanted still fails to bring him joy, Rudolph discovers that happiness was closer to home than he ever imagined.

Horn Book Review

(Primary) Young Rudolph, a poor charcoal peddler, complains endlessly about his hard lot until his mother reveals to him that he has a godfather with magical powers who lives high up in the Black Forest. Rudolph finds this man made of glass and is rewarded with a sack of silver coins, but this gift only makes him wish for more. He keeps returning until his godfather gives him a glass pinecone that provides an unlimited supply of gold coins, with the admonition that ""only the curse of what you ask for can save you now!"" The meaning of those words becomes clear to Rudolph only after, having traveled the world over satisfying his every whim, he realizes that his heart has turned as hard as glass and that he was happiest when he was a simple peddler. This homely message, delivered with unctuous sincerity at the end, is redeemed by Dirk Zimmer's typically witty and brightly colored illustrations. n.v. (c) Copyright 2010.
