Miska, a former Special Forces operative, steals a prison spaceship called the Hangman's Daughter. With the computerized ghost of her murdered father, she works to turn the liberated prisoners into a legion of mercenaries working solely for her. When their first job goes bad from the start, Miska has to use every resource at her disposal and a great deal of creativity to pull her untried criminal soldiers into a cohesive force. The complex plot twists and double-crosses are as exciting as the detailed descriptions of violent combat. Layers of complex tensions and loyalties all interact in intriguing ways. A group of hardened criminals residing on a prison ship makes for an unlikely crew, but that doesn't bother military special-ops officer Miska Corbin. Hangman's Daughter is an infamous prison ship in a world where criminals serve out their sentences in an induced sleep aboard a drifting vessel. Miska has taken it over to perform questionable missions, with her father advising her along the way. Though the Hangman's occupants are not working with her by choice, they unwillingly form a kind of respect and rapport with each other as they attempt to fulfill their quest. As time goes on, it becomes obvious that the job isn't what they were led to believe, and what seemed like an open-and-shut case ends up becoming muddled with confusion. Through it all is Miska's own motive for stealing the Hangman's Daughter in the first place, which further plays on the everything isn't what you think it is theme. An action-packed series starter like this will surely please science-fiction fans, especially those who miss the TV show Firefly.--Rasak, Carrie Copyright 2017 Booklist
