Owls are perennially popular subjects. A mixture of the heavily anecdotal and results of scientific study, this brief volume looks at 11 owl species found in the Pacific Northwest. Calvez (Whale Watching on the West Coast: Stories of Blue Whales, Gray Whales, Humpbacks and Orcas) is a naturalist with wide-ranging experiences, especially with cetaceans such as humpback whales and spinner dolphins. Although she refers to others' research, they are not cited; the text largely focuses on her own experiences with owls. Calvez writes with feeling and is obviously in awe of these mysterious creatures. The black-and-white illustrations by Angell are disappointing, some verging on the grotesque, and are at odds with his good work in his Ravens, Crows, Magpies and Jays. The list of resources features nine websites but none of the many superior books on owls widely available, such as Scott Weidensaul's excellent Peterson Reference Guide to Owls of North America and the Caribbean.
