What is the Seed Library?

The Seed Library at the Dearborn Public Library shares seeds with anyone interested in growing food or flowers.  The goal of the Seed Library is to encourage gardening, gardening knowledge, community socializing and mutual aid as well as the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables in order to promote better health.  In addition to seeds, the Seed Library and partners provide information and resources about gardening and saving seeds.

Saving seeds from your garden and growing them the next year is a great way to get healthy, hardy plants. The Seed Library hopes you will save some seeds from your plants and share them back at the end of the season. That will make the Seed Library self-sustaining.  People may also donate commercially grown seeds but, please, only non-GMO seeds.

How does the Seed Library operate?

The main Seed Library operates out of the Henry Ford Centennial Library, with some seeds available at the Bryant and Esper Branches. The Seed Library is designed to be self-served, though staff are happy to help with questions and locate resources.

Patrons can visit the library to sign up, borrow, or return seeds anytime the library is open. Before using the Seed Library, patrons are asked to fill out a Seed Library Membership Form. Patrons can take an information packet to help in their seed saving endeavors.  Please know that the returned seeds stocked in the Seed Library have been grown by amateurs, and that there is no guarantee any particular seed will grow.

In order to help cultivate our growing movement, please share your growing and gardening experiences with Library staff. We’d love to share your photos and stories on Library social media.

Please direct questions Joseph Wasukanis at (313)-943-2121 or jwasukanis@ci.dearborn.mi.us.

Do I need a library card?
