We would like to make you aware of a major change coming to the Lynda.com platform, and to inform you that in August, the Cora J. Belden Library will no longer provide direct access to this resource.
The Cora J. Belden Library has offered access to Lynda.com for the last several years. Lynda.com was bought out by LinkedIn. Recently LinkedIn has changed its terms of service. Lynda.com content will be called “LinkedIn Learning,” and to use the platform, LinkedIn will require all users to create a LinkedIn social media profile, which will be publicly searchable on the web.
We have never required patrons to sign up for a publicly-searchable social media account to use a library resource and do not feel comfortable with this new policy.
The American Library Association has disavowed LinkedIn’s new terms of service and are encouraging them to change them in light of the Library Code of Ethics. Many libraries throughout the country are pulling their provision of Lynda.com content before the change occurs, so that we do not expose our patrons to the privacy vulnerabilities that come with the LinkedIn platform.
We would like to encourage you to try out
Universal Class, an online learning resource that has been trusted by libraries for many years now. We will also be looking into additional technology training services in the near future.
