Booklist Review

Holly Lawrence was orphaned as a child and raised by a chilly grandmother. When she met the very attentive and handsome doctor Zac, she felt protected, as if she belonged somewhere, for the first time in her life. Zac's loving attention soon turned to pathological control, however, and in the scenes that take place in the present, Holly is in hiding, having run away from her abusive marriage. These scenes alternate with flashbacks that show Holly still with Zac and pregnant (readers should note that some of the sex and the pregnancy are nonconsensual, on Holly's part). In the present-day scenes, Holly is childless, and, as the time line unravels, readers are slowly, and shockingly, led to understand what happened and just how low deception and abuse can go. Psychological thrillers set in England abound lately, and patrons will eagerly consume this one, which is largely set in the city of Bath. Suggest Kendal's latest to fans of Alice LaPlante's Circle of Wives (2014) and of Paula Hawkins' novels.--Henrietta Verma Copyright 2010 Booklist
