A simple, straightforward exploration of Transcendental Meditation and its benefits from world authority Bob Roth.
Oprah Winfrey and Jerry Seinfeld. Ray Dalio and Ellen DeGeneres. Gwyneth Paltrow and Howard Stern. Tom Hanks and Gisele Bündchen.
What do they have in common? The answer is a Transcendental Meditation teacher named Bob Roth, who has spent the past forty-five years helping many thousands of people access their innate creativity and power through this simple, nonreligious technique. Roth's students range from titans of business and the arts to federal prisoners, from war-scarred veterans to overworked moms and dads.
Medical experts agree that the epidemic of stress is damaging our physical and emotional health at younger and younger ages. While there is no one single cure, the Transcendental Meditation technique is a simple practice that dramatically changes how we respond to stress and life's challenges. With scientifically proven benefits-- reduced stress and anxiety, and improved focus, sleep, resilience, creativity, and memory, to name a few--this five-thousand-year-old technique has a clear and direct impact on our very modern problems.
Once a skeptic, Roth trained under Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the twentieth century's foremost scientist of consciousness and meditation, and has since become one of the most experienced and sought-after meditation teachers in the world. In Strength in Stillness , Roth breaks down the science behind Transcendental Meditation in a new, accessible way. He highlights the three distinct types of meditation--Focused Attention, Open Monitoring, and Self-Transcending--and showcases the evidence that the third, Self-Transcending, or Transcendental Meditation, is a uniquely accessible, effective, and efficient way to reduce stress, access inner power, and build resilience.
Free of gimmicks, mystical verbiage, and obscure theory, Strength in Stillness offers a clear explanation for how Transcendental Meditation can calm the mind, body, and spirit.

Transcendental meditation (TM) was brought to the United States by the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in the late 1950s and early 1960s, specifically to teach the Western mind a simple technique to reduce stress and increase personal resiliency. Since that time, hundreds of scientific studies have been conducted to show the efficacy of this particular style of meditation. Roth, a longtime teacher of TM and CEO of the David Lynch Foundation, an organization dedicated to bringing meditation to inner-city children, writes knowingly and convincingly of the value a meditative practice with no dogma, religion, or philosophy attached. He expertly differentiates TM from other types of meditation and discusses extensively the scientifically proven benefits such as cardiovascular health, reduction of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, and alleviation of anxiety disorders. Punctuated throughout are testimonials of healing and life-changing results by TM mediators including celebrities such as Katy Perry, Lena Dunham, and Hugh Jackman. Verdict A thorough explanation of what transcendental meditation is and is not that will appeal to readers of mindfulness and seekers of stress reduction and mental composure.-Janet Tapper, Univ. of Western States Lib., Portland, OR © Copyright 2018. In this well-argued book, Roth, a transcendental meditation instructor, explains that the mantra-based technique can reduce stress, raise productivity, and increase happiness. Describing TM as coming from the "oldest continuous meditation tradition in the world," Roth outlines in clear, simple language what TM is, how it differs from other widely taught forms of meditation, how effective it is (based on the results of peer-reviewed research studies), and what happens during the four-day training period he prescribes. Roth, who refers to himself as a "natural skeptic," contends that TM is not a religion, belief system, or way of life; rather it is a way of calming the mind. He briefly covers the history of TM, which was developed by the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in the 1950s and is now supported by a worldwide organization, without delving too far into the complexities of that story. Testimonials from business leaders and celebrities, including Jerry Seinfeld, Lena Dunham, and Katy Perry, provide enthusiastic support for Roth's claims of TM's benefits. The heart of the book, however, is Roth's description of his work with the David Lynch Foundation, which brings TM to students in impoverished schools, veterans with PTSD, and others who seek inner and outer calm. Those looking for more information on this popular technique will find Roth to be an effective, lucid guide. (Feb.) © Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.Booklist Review
Roth is not your ordinary neighborhood transcendental-meditation (TM) teacher. He wears suits, is obsessed with science, and is not into woo-woo stuff. Yet, over the past 45 years, he has become one of TM's leading exponents and instructors. Perhaps accordingly, he makes large claims for the 5,000-year-old technique: it brings greater balance in life, he asserts, as well as more creativity, better health, less stress and happiness. All of this for an investment of only 20 minutes twice a day. More about the technique is found in the three sections or what the author calls Pillars into which the book is divided: an explanation of the technique, the experience of being trained, and a guide to develop your full creative innermost self. All this is well and good, but those seeking a how-to guide will be disappointed, as the author stresses the need to receive individual training from a specialist, who will provide a personal mantra essential to employing the technique. Nevertheless, for the curious, the book provides a straightforward, easily digestible introduction to an intriguing discipline. This way, Nirvana.--Cart, Michael Copyright 2018 BooklistAuthor notes provided by Syndetics
