Radon Screening Kits are now available to borrow at Red Deer Public Library (RDPL), thanks to a joint effort between RDPL and the Alberta Lung Association. Radon can pose a serious health risk, so according to the Lung Association, it is important for people to test their home. These screening kits run a short term test that can help users determine if radon is a risk in their home, and if they should pursue further testing. Radon is a cancer causing radioactive gas emitted naturally from the ground and can get into a house through basement floors, concrete cracks, wall joints or other openings. The gas is invisible, tasteless and odourless and if it tests at high levels it can be dangerous - increasing your risk of developing lung cancer. Each kit contains an electronic device called Corentium Home which detects home radon levels. Complete with instruction manual, this device is easy to set up and use. Kits also contain helpful information homeowners can refer to if they find radon is present. For more comprehensive results, homeowners are still recommended to do a long term test, which can be purchased from https://www.homeradontest.ca/order/create with discount code RADONPROMO.
