Donzaleigh Abernathy: Partners to History:
Martin Luther King Jr., Ralph David Abernathy, and the Civil Rights Movement
Ralph David Abernathy and Martin Luther King, Jr. were inseparable and together helped to establish what would become the modern American Civil Rights Movement. They preached, marched and were frequently jailed together. Donzaleigh Abernathy, Ralph’s youngest daughter, has written Partners to History as a testament to the courage, strength and endurance of these men who stirred a nation with their moral fortitude. She also pays tribute to the thousands of unsung heroes—the other partners to this history—who were foot soldiers in the endless struggle for freedom, justice and equality. This document captures in words and pictures how the dream of two visionaries changed the course of American history. To attend the program on Zoom sign up at https://pasadena.evanced.info/signup/EventDetails?EventId=5121.

Library Assists Public in Applying for Housing is Key Rental Assistance Program
On Monday Nov. 8, 2021, the City became an approved local partner for the State’s Housing Is Key rental assistance program. In partnership with the City’s Department of Housing, the Library has begun helping residents who are behind on their rent and/or utilities.

Housing is Key is a state-funded program for both tenants and landlords that will provide up to 18 months of rental assistance and unpaid utilities. The State has committed $5.2 billion in rental relief funds for California residents.

By logging onto the states webpage and viewing the dashboard https://housing.ca.gov/covid_rr/dashboard.html visitors can select the specific county and city in order to view the number of applications submitted, the number of applications served as well as the total amount of funds requested and the total funds paid.

For instance, as of Dec. 16, 2021, 2,613 applications have been submitted requesting $44,245,952. Of these 2,613 applications, there have been 1,154 applications served with an average of $12,184 per household bringing the total dollar amount to $14,060,825. Be sure to check back periodically to see the change in numbers.

The Library has been alerting the community to the rental assistance program through word of mouth and via social media; as a result, hundreds of individuals have been reached.

Villa Parke Branch Library staff alone helped nearly 60 community members from November through the end of December. A number of the clients were assisted in their native tongue. Many of them sought out help from the library either because they lack access to a computer and the internet or because they have not developed computer skills.

Beginning Jan. 3, 2022, until the State’s funds are exhausted, the La Pintoresca Branch Library will be assisting the public with their rental assistance applications.

For information about the program visit https://housing.ca.gov/.

FEBRUARY
Washington Square
(1997) PG-CC
Catherine Sloper, favored by neither beauty nor brilliance, is a wallflower of another age. The daughter of a wealthy and distinguished physician, she has forever been the victim of her father's callous remarks that she possesses none of her deceased mother's loveliness, charm or finesse. Under her father's oppression, Catherine is a shy and awkward young woman tottering into spinsterhood - until she is suddenly and tempestuously courted by the smooth and dashing wastrel Morris Townsend, with whom she falls wildly and completely in love. Catherine is also heir to an imposing fortune which leads her father to be highly suspicious of Morris' intentions. Encouraged by her incurably romantic and sympathetic Aunt Lavinia, Catherine is convinced that Morris loves her for herself alone. He is the first man to court her and she flies to him in perfect trust. When Morris asks for Catherine's hand, Dr. Sloper, replete with wealth and arrogance, is determined to convince his daughter that the only reason a man of Townsend's exceptional comeliness and youthful charm could possibly be interested in her would be for her fortune. Thus, Catherine is forced to make a fateful choice that will affect her happiness - and the rest of her life.
