News from the Director
| | Greetings, Intrepid Reader,
You have turned the page to a new season. Summer has arrived, a time for adventure and relaxation. May the library be an oasis from the heat and a source of inspiration for you in the days ahead.
Let’s all make time to slow down, get off our screen devices and spend time with books this summer. Reading offers us so many important benefits. The ability to focus, learn and build empathy are all skills we build when we journey through the pages of a good book.
Let us help you connect with your next good read. The library offers so many great reading materials free of charge to everyone in the community. And our creative, dedicated staff has added countless activities and programs to our calendar to encourage you to keep reading through the summer months. Take a look in this newsletter for listings.
See you at the library. You are welcome here. Tim McDonald Library Director |

Central Library Update | |
Thank you so much for your support of the Pasadena Public Library and Measure PL! We are pleased to announce that the construction phase of the Central Library Retrofit and Building Repairs project will begin in late summer, with a 30–36-month completion timeline. A call for proposals for the project’s construction management elicited many responses, which are currently being evaluated. Once a company has been selected, it will go to City Council for approval. The project will then move ahead quickly.
In preparation for the retrofit project, the library’s collection management staff who purchase, catalog, and maintain our holdings have relocated from their temporary trailer in Central Library’s parking lot to renovated office space in the Rose Palace. In their new location, they will be able to access and tend Central Library's collection. The trailer they occupied was recently removed from the parking lot. The book drops located on Garfield Avenue and Walnut Street will be temporarily removed on July 31 and returned prior to the buildings reopening in 2028. Until then please drop off any return library materials you have at one of our 10 branches located throughout the city.
As part of the retrofit, the area surrounding the library will be cordoned off by a large construction fence. This will be decorated with artwork submittals from the library’s Art on the Fence project. When it’s up, we encourage you to stop by and view the creativity of our local artists.
We will continue to keep you aware of what is happening throughout the project through frequent updates, in Off the Shelf (print and eNews), social media and on our website. Central Library has special meaning and memories for each of us. The retrofit and repairs project will ensure that it continues to provide a hub for learning, a home for memories, and a place of wonder for generations to come. |
