News from the Director
| |
How did I become a librarian? I was lucky. I did not pay for my master’s degree in library science. I was fortunate – extremely so – to have a full scholarship that was federally funded. The name of the scholarship was the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program. Grants like mine supported the education and future career success of diverse and/or underrepresented library science students.
When I learned about the scholarship, I discovered that I have something in common with former First Lady Laura Bush. We were both elementary school teachers who later became librarians. I imagine we share a belief that the library is a gathering place for the community, a place that fosters lifelong learning and unfettered sharing of information. She once said, “Our nation runs on the fuel of information and imagination that libraries provide. And they are in charge of collecting and sharing this information in a helpful way. Librarians inform the public, and by doing so, they strengthen our great democracy.”
I am grateful to Mrs. Bush for her leadership in developing the librarians of America’s future. I am also thankful to all of you for choosing the Pasadena Public Library for your information needs.
Wishing you a happy summer ahead with a good book by your side,
Tim McDonald

 | Readying for Construction, Pasadena Public Library Moves its Rare Local History Collection to a Surprising, Temporary Home |
|
This week the last remaining collection at Pasadena’s Central Library – the Centennial Room collection dedicated to the preservation of local history and culture– was moved to a new, temporary location for safe keeping during the upcoming retrofit of the historic building.
The Centennial Room held the library’s collection of nearly 10,000 books and other materials which reflect Pasadena’s unique historical and cultural development. Materials include magazines and newsletters, newspapers and news clippings, oral history transcripts, pamphlets, scrapbooks, yearbooks, city directories, historical maps, photographs, sound and video recordings, ephemera, city reports and many other types of City documents. Special attention is given to collecting “tomorrow’s history,” which means that essential current information about the City is also a part of this collection and available for research or personal study. These are one-of-a-kind, irreplaceable resources that document Pasadena’s rich history and continuing evolution.
Due to the age and fragile condition of some of this important archival collection, it was critical to find a site that provided optimal preservation during Central Library’s retrofit and repair project. After much searching, a site was found that met the temperature and humidity recommendations for paper-based collections: the former morgue at the Pasadena Public Health Department, once the Alta Vista Hospital. The space was renovated, shelving was added, and the collection was prepared for the move and relocated in April.
“I appreciate the generosity of the Public Health Department in sharing their building space with us temporarily,” said Library Director Tim McDonald, “and I look forward to returning these items to their home in the Central Library Centennial Room when the retrofit and repairs project is completed in 2028. The library is an essential community gathering place for sharing information. By protecting these one-of-a-kind local history resources, the library will ensure that future generations can learn about our city’s past.”
The Centennial Room collection is currently closed to public access. If you have a question or research topic requiring access to these historical materials, please contact library staff or submit a request for assistance. Staff can assist with research, or in some cases can provide access to materials via appointment. Find out how to get help, submit a question, or book a consultation at CityOfPasadena.net/Library/Questions-Help/. |

Celebrating History |
| |
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Hill Avenue Branch Library, located at 55 S. Hill Ave. The library was designed by noted Pasadena firm Marston, Van Pelt and Maybury and opened on May 6, 1925. It is the oldest library building in Pasadena, preceding the opening of the Central Library by two years.
However, the Hill Avenue Branch’s history goes further back to 1910, when the library board established the East Branch after residents petitioned for a library to be opened in their part of the city. It was first located on the second floor of the Giddings Building, owned by the Giddings family, on Colorado Boulevard and Holliston Avenue. It started out with a collection of 700 books, but by the end of the decade the collection had grown to over 7,000 books and periodicals. In 1919, the branch moved to larger quarters in a vacant feed and fuel building.
During its first 10 years, the East Pasadena Branch, as it was also known, maintained a busy schedule working with the Jefferson and Grant elementary schools nearby and depositing books at six fire stations on a quarterly basis.
In 1922 a rainstorm caused heavy damage to the building it was using and, when repairs proved too costly, it was decided that a new library should be built instead. The bonds for a new building failed to pass in 1923 but passed in 1924 after a vigorous campaign to build a permanent branch in East Pasadena.
The current building opened in 1925 and was dedicated as the Hill Avenue Branch. Designed in the Spanish Colonial Revival style, the building’s historical architecture has been maintained throughout the years, and it is listed as one of the City of Pasadena's Cultural Heritage Landmarks.
Located at a busy intersection near Pasadena City College, Caltech, Saint Philip the Apostle School and a thriving neighborhood, the Hill Avenue Branch continues to be engaged with the community it serves and is one of the most visited libraries in Pasadena. Stop by and check out this century-old library! Young Phong, Pasadena History Librarian |

Concluding our year-long 140th Anniversary Celebration | |
Pasadena Public Library marked 140 years of service in 2024 with one main goal – celebrating the people who make our library possible. We hosted 10 special programs, launched a year-long reading challenge, gave away limited-edition 140th Anniversary items and premiered a commemorative video to showcase our story of community and the people who make each day memorable. Alongside these celebrations, we solicited stories from staff and patrons alike to collect their favorite memories of Pasadena Public Library.
These stories now fill the pages of our one-of-a-kind memory book – The People of PPL. With its publication, we hope to tell a more complete story of the Pasadena Public Library: a story made of the people who shape our institution by simply being here.
We invite you to pick up a free copy of The People of PPL beginning May 1 at any of our library locations. |

A Note from The Friends of the Pasadena Public Library President on One City, One Story 2025
| One of the most popular events of the spring in Pasadena occurred Saturday, March 15, when the 23rd presentation of One City, One Story began to a standing-room-only crowd in the sanctuary of Pasadena Presbyterian Church. Almost 800 people, all having read the book, James, winner of the 2024 National Book Award, came to hear author Percival Everett speak about this imaginative and challenging book.
The event began with a moving interpretive dance by two high school seniors, Enija Airaje Lopez and Jai Wright from John Muir and Pasadena High Schools. They choreographed a dance to music based on spirituals, a reference to some of the music in the book.
Mr. Everett then spoke with Library Director Tim McDonald about his process in writing the book, his thoughts on Mark Twain, the choice of language used by the main character James, references to music in the book, and the twisted history of racism in this country. He answered questions submitted by the audience, which was clearly eager for him to continue. After his talk, a line of enthusiastic fans waited up to an hour for Mr. Everett to sign their book.
The Friends of the Pasadena Public Library, which has helped sponsor One City, One Story for over 20 years, participated again this year by selling 50 copies of James to attendees after the author spoke. The Friends were proud to be a part of this year’s successful program and happy to encourage readers to engage with each other over this brilliant book. His story and scholarship bring us in close contact with Harlem Renaissance greats, such as Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen. Zora Neal Hurston, Car Van Vechten and many others who transformed multiple literary and art forms. As an artist and archivist, Bontemps committed to sharing the vast contributions each of them made such that he became known as "keeper of the flame." In honor of Juneteenth, Anya Booker, Bontemps' granddaughter, will journey through his legacy while also inviting us to explore our own. For ages 18+.

Exhibits | Multi-point Symmetry: The Modern Mandala by
Bart Ross, Artists May 5 – June 30 | Hastings Branch Library
Artist Bart Ross’s work explores hidden visual orders through the concept of multi-point symmetry — transforming everyday photographic subjects into intricate Modern Mandalas. Ross’s process evolves from flopping, the old darkroom technique. He creates complex compositions where multiple points in an image act as centers of symmetry inviting a shift from the traditional central focus to a dynamic, meditative interplay of peripheral elements. This approach offers a mesmerizing experience that engages the viewer's natural attraction to pattern and symmetry, often evoking a sense of calm and contemplation. Ross views these images as visual mantras—similar to Islamic geometric art and echoing his own meditative process—reflections of inner stillness and hidden order within the apparent chaos of daily life. His techniques have evolved from large-format photography to a more spontaneous, handheld street-style approach, capturing fleeting moments ripe for symmetrical transformation.
