When Carrian was a little girl, her mother would take the family berry picking, and countless, exhausting hours were spent weeding the garden so they could enjoy a bountiful harvest at the end of summer. The fresh foods of the Pacific Northwest, a farm-to-table mentality, and a love for homemade meals were a way of life. Carrian often says that she had no idea just how good she had it. She fell in love with the sweet marionberries from the farm down the road, and she often dipped big, juicy strawberries in the sugar bowl. Her philosophy is "There's nothing like fresh ingredients." Meanwhile, Cade was busy growing up on the other side of the country. Boiled peanuts, gooey macaroni and cheese, and deep-fried everything was the love language of the South. Throw in a little football, and you've got yourself a very happy Cade. Cade was quick to learn that every recipe has a story behind it and that the best recipes include a little bit of the cook's soul with the meal. Fast forward a few years, and somehow we found each other and fell in love with each other and with the flavors of each other's childhoods. We started a life blending not only our traditions and families but also our Pacific Northwest and Southern ways of life. On our third anniversary, we took a trip to San Francisco, where we tasted the most delicious Margherita pizza ever. It was fresh and flavorful--and the sweet basil was the perfect finishing touch. After returning home, we felt inspired to start cooking with more fresh ingredients, finding new recipes to share, and most of all, doing it together. It didn't take us long to discover that the more time we shared in the kitchen creating something delicious, the more family stories were discovered and new traditions were created. Our hearts were filled. Cooking isn't just about the food, it's about the hands that created it. For us, that means sharing a little Southern comfort and a little farm-to-table. But wherever you are and whatever flavors you are sharing, remember that good food and good people make for a good life. -Cade and Carrian Cheney Excerpted from Our Sweet Basil Kitchen: Fresh Twists on Family Favorites with Recipe Mashups and Unique Flavor Combinations by Cade Cheney, Carrian Cheney All rights reserved by the original copyright owners. Publishers Weekly Review

The Cheneys bring their popular Oh, Sweet Basil food blog to life in this collection of over 100 recipes that's just a little too focused on the classics. The book's title promises "fresh twists" and mash-ups, but readers will find that the majority of the fare featured here is unremarkable. Recipes include pedestrian fare such as baked potato soup, seven-layer dip, broccoli with cheese sauce, beef stew, and brown sugar grilled pineapple. These are fine for what they are but offer nothing new, and many are widely available online and featured over and over again in mainstream media. Though there are a few bright spots (a summery mango chicken salad, crunchy deep-fried strawberry shortcakes, and a rich roasted tomato basil soup with grilled cheese croutons), it's not enough to save this rote assemblage of classic recipes that have already been done to death. Booklist Review

Authors Cade and Carrian Cheney are husband and wife, enthusiastic home cooks, and the duo behind the food blog Oh, Sweet Basil, which inspired this fun-loving and eclectic collection of everyday recipes. Their thesis is simple: enjoy time together cooking in the kitchen. The dishes that follow don't hew to a particular style, other than offering a good helping of Southern flavors from Cade's upbringing and a farm-to-table emphasis via Carrian, who grew up weeding the family garden in Washington State. This is home cooking with a twist of whimsy and a dash of Paula Dean decadence. Stock up on heavy cream for invented dishes like chicken-pot-pie soup and chicken-cordon-bleu lasagna. The Cheneys also take a fresh stab at maligned classics like sloppy joes and green-bean casseroles, and include a handful of bright and easy salads. Recipes are well written, even if the headnotes are not. Thin personal anecdotes about the authors quickly become repetitive. Still, readers will find plenty of weeknight dinner ideas and an upbeat approach to family meals.--Neumer Lara, Alison Copyright 2017 Booklist
