Providing services, programs and resources to children and families is a key priority for the San Francisco Public Library.
- Responsibility: The safety and behavior of children are the responsibility of the parent/caregiver, not library staff; library employees cannot be responsible for unattended children or those demonstrating inappropriate behavior.
- Children under 8: Must be accompanied by a responsible person aged 12 or older or an assigned caregiver, who must remain in the immediate vicinity and in visual contact and carry emergency contact information.
- Unattended under-8 procedure: If an under-8 child is found unattended, staff will attempt to locate the parent/caregiver in the library and inform them of the rules; if the parent/caregiver cannot be found or the child is unattended again, staff will call the police.
- Children 8 and older: May use the library alone, but parents remain responsible for their actions and well-being.
- Behavior and leaving: Patrons, including children, who use inappropriate behavior may be asked to leave under SFPL’s Code of Conduct. If a child age 8 or older cannot leave the library on their own, they should not be unaccompanied.
- Emergency contact: All unaccompanied children should have the telephone number of someone who can assist them in an emergency.
