Your Library Holiday Guide
This past year, my sister decided that in lieu of gifts, she would start sending small donations to local causes. For me, she made a small donation to our library. I was touched by her thoughtful gift and admired that she found a loving way to show affection that also cultivates the communities of those she cares about.

I was especially excited about this donation, because it meant I got to tell my sister how much impact her gift will have. Donations directly to the Library or through the Friends of the Library support many of our most popular offerings, which this year included things like:

-Support for many fun and interesting programs, including annual events like the summer reading program
-A new early learning computer station for young children to learn beginning literacy skills
-Ebook & e-audiobook offerings on Libby
-A useful and attractive pushcart that helps us take books and fun throughout the community
-Author and magazine sponsors that help us put some of our most popular offerings on the shelf.

Her gift to the library is one that will truly give again and again. For her gift, and for all the gifts we have received, I cannot help but feel fiercely grateful. We are so grateful for the donations, the work of the Friends of the Library and all our volunteers, and all the other support we have received.

Below you’ll see a few of our holiday programs at the library. Please come and celebrate the season with us! And I invite you to consider making a donation to the library, to pass on the care, support, and fun to others in the community.

-One-time or recurring financial gifts to help us purchase materials and program supplies not covered by the Library’s budget.
-A donation to celebrate or honor a book-loving friend or family member.
-Sponsoring an author, magazine, or database to make sure that your favorite materials are available for everyone in the community!

Karen Vedder - 2025 Board President
Karen Vedder has had a San Juan Island Library card since 1974. Since arriving on the island she has worked as a biologist, newspaper reporter and attorney. She spent over a decade in the prosecutor’s office where she helped county departments accomplish their missions of serving the citizens of San Juan County. She hopes to use that experience in being part of a team of trustees whose goal it is to provide an exemplary library to everyone on San Juan Island. Three books that she highly recommends from our library are: The Hare With Amber Eyes by Edmund de Wall, Above Ground, poems by Clint Smith, and A Walk Through The Park by Kevin Fedarko.
