Good Gatherings and an Open House
You can probably feel the buzz of anticipation radiating from me as the library rolls out a fresh lineup of programs. As we inch towards Spring, you can fill your time with exciting community events. A few I’m especially excited for:

The upcoming edition of Local Lowdown promises another deep dive into community stories, local talent, and the hidden gems that make our island unique. This month, we are hosting the San Juan Historical Museum, so prepare your most pressing historical questions, and join us on Wednesday, February 11th, at 7pm.

Also thrilling is the launch of the community Spanish language classes, set to begin soon. There are two levels set to begin on Wednesday, February 11th: a class for true beginners who have very little Spanish-speaking ability, and a class designed for the intermediate student looking to improve their real-world communication.

Then there’s the Senior Class Book Club, a welcoming book club for seniors and aging adults hosted by the San Juan Island Library. Senior Class explores best-selling and popular titles from all genres and eras. The group votes on selections, and suggestions are always welcomed.

But I am most excited for the Open House Presenting Library Conceptual Designs at Brickworks on Thursday, February 12th, from 12pm-7pm, showcasing conceptual designs for the library’s future home. Walking through the open house, you’ll witness the ideas grown from community discussions, and have the opportunity to further the conversation by providing your thoughts on the potential library designs. The chance to see these ideas come alive, imagining quiet reading nooks bathed in natural light, collaborative zones buzzing with activity, and cutting‑edge technology seamlessly integrated, will make the open house feel like a glimpse into a thrilling new chapter for the library you already cherish. I’m counting down the days until you can explore every detail of the conceived designs.

More information is available below for each of these events, and there are many, many other events for people of all ages. Come in and enjoy some time together!

NEW BUILDING PROJECT
Coming February 12th, 2026:

Please join the San Juan Island Library at the Brickworks on Thursday, February 12th, from 12pm-7pm, for an open house about the New Library Building Project. The New Library Building Steering Committee will host a special library board meeting where the Library’s architectural consultants will present the new library conceptual designs. These designs, based on the community’s feedback collected during a series of four public meetings held in Fall 2025, will be used to solicit additional comment from the community. Presentations at 12pm, 3pm, and 6pm will review the library’s progress on this project and the next steps.

Opportunities for feedback will be available, and light refreshments served. Come and learn more!
