STAFF PICK

Old Southern Apples by Creighton Lee Calhoun

"Most people think that apple tree growing is limited to cooler areas of the South, like the mountains and foothills of the Carolinas. However, did you know that there were more than 1,800 heirloom varieties of apples grown throughout the South, all with different tastes, textures and uses, and many of them have been lost to time? Old Southern Apples, by Creighton Lee Calhoun Jr., is an attempt to record the stories and identities of these varieties before they are lost forever. This book was one

of the first that got me interested in the idea of learning about our shared history through the story of the heirloom fruits and vegetables we preserve. If you are at all interested in learning how and why some heirloom crops are no longer farmed and where our food comes from, this book is for you."
