NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK

April 19–25

Libraries do so much more than lend books. The theme of this year’s National Library Week is Find Your Joy, and we encourage everyone to discover what makes the library special to them. Attend a program that sparks your interest, connect with others who share your hobbies, research using reliable resources or reserve a study or meeting space. Better yet, simply browse the shelves and see where your curiosity leads.

STAFF PICK

Helen of Troy, 1993 by Maria Zoccola

"Imminently readable and thought-provoking, like a gut punch, Zoccola delivers an epic in verse: a feminist working of The Iliad that recasts Helen as a 1990s Tennessee housewife. The entire tale, because it very much reads like a tale, turns banality and even cruelty into something elegant, like good poetry does. Helen's tale reminds us what it is like, what it has always been like, to be a woman, and the recurring interrogation of the swan mythos reminds us what it is like to be a woman in the vicinity of men.

The quaint and almost pastoral mood of the work belies an ancient, cut-to-the-quick understanding of the nihilism of small-town living and the disconnection innate to womanhood. Zoccola gives us a Helen who wrestles with her circumstances, her autonomy and her choices. Clever references will make this book of poetry especially enjoyable to those who are familiar with The Iliad, but it is certainly not a prerequisite to appreciate Helen's story. I wanted to read it all over again as soon as I finished."
