South Country Library
Weekly Round-Up
June 6, 2020
Building community by sharing the wonders of learning, creating and connecting with one another.

Hello South Country Community,

You've made it to June and deserve a prize. Well, how about a brand new South Country Library mobile app?! I know, I'm excited too. More info and download links are just below, along with a webinar on finding & applying to jobs online, upcoming virtual fitness programs, and more.

This week, Staying Stable features new options for food assistance, an upcoming virtual Day of Wellness for veterans and their families, and a Town Hall event addressing racism presented by Sesame Street & CNN, for children and families.

In Leisure & Learning, get your history caps back on for this week's trivia challenge. Plus another round of Fantastic Finds on the Libby app, and heads-up for all you gardeners -- you'll want to check out one of the upcoming programs hosted by our neighbors at Patchogue-Medford Library.

Stay hydrated out there. We'll be in your inbox again next week!

Foods to Travel By!

Sample Scottish, Austrian, Irish, Swiss, and French treats! We’ll stop in Scotland for Ginger Nut Biscuits, which are cookies that are neither nutty nor like biscuits served with dinner! In Austria we’ll try our hand at Viennese Vanilla Crescents, with ties to a war. In Ireland, there’s the very traditional Soda Bread – using a family recipe brought over from Ireland to the US. And what could be more fun than reviving an at-home party standard – Swiss chocolate fondue! We’ll round out the experience in a foodie capital of the world -- France -- with typical street comfort food -- Nutella-filled crêpes.

Sesame Street and CNN have hosted another Town Hall for Kids and Families, this time to help discuss and address racism. The show speaks with kids about racism, the recent nationwide protests, embracing diversity and being more empathetic and understanding.
Big Bird joins CNN staff Van Jones and Erica Hill to moderate the event. They are joined by Sesame Street characters -- including Elmo, Abby Cadabby and Rosita -- and other experts answering questions submitted by families. Click here to watch.

Cooperation Long Island has lists of food pantries and groups doing food delivery on Long Island. They also maintain lists for assistance with unemployment, mental health services, business and financial support, and more.
