South Country Library
Weekly Round-Up
May 30, 2020
Building community by sharing the wonders of learning, creating and connecting with one another.

Hello South Country Community,

We have exciting news -- please see our Library Building Reopening Plan below! And don't miss the information about the South Country Schools Budget vote, and the Library and School Trustee elections. Plus a résumé-writing workshop, the next Virtual Vacation...and remember the book discussion this Tuesday!

Staying Stable features a new Suffolk County job board, so check it out of you're a job-seeker or employer looking to hire. Also -- announcements from Deer Run Farms and Peter's on the Green!

Beyond a new round of Netflix Trivia, Leisure & Learning is all about reading this time (what a surprise!) with a new book by J.K. Rowling being released online for free, and new reading suggestions for both kids and adults.

Be well, and we hope to see you this summer! In the meantime, there will be another one of these next week :)

P.S. Have you completed the Census? Now, more than ever, for fair representation in government and access to funding, we need an accurate count of our community. You can complete it online here.

Library Building Reopening Plan

Our four-phased reopening plan (below) has been approved by the Library's Board of Trustees. As always with this pandemic, plans are subject to change, hence the reason there are no firm dates attached. We'll keep you updated each step of the way!
We can tell you that Phase 1 will begin on June 1, when our staff will gradually be returning to the building to learn new protocols and procedures, assess the layout of the building, and develop plans to operate with health and safety as a priority, as well as helping those who need it most. The building will not be open to patrons yet. When ready, we will move onto Phase 2 -- implementing our new curbside pickup service. Throughout this time we will continue to be available via phone, email, and live chat, so contact us if you have any questions. We are very excited to get back in the library and find new, creative, and safe ways to serve you all!

The School Budget Vote/Trustee Election and South Country Library Trustee Election is June 9, 2020.
All voting will be by Absentee Ballot only as per Executive Order 202.26. Ballots have been mailed to all registered voters of the South Country Central School District. Ballots may be returned by mail or deposited in a secure drop box in front of the District Office.
The mailing address and drop box location is the District office, at 189 N. Dunton Avenue, East Patchogue, NY,

The drop box is open on weekdays starting June 1, 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM, and on Tuesday, June 9 from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM.

Ballots must be received by the District Clerk by 5:00 pm on Tuesday, June 9. Questions can be directed to the District Clerk by phone at 631-730-1542 or email to cflynn@southcountry.org.

Résumé Writing Workshop (on Zoom)
Wednesday June 3, 5:30-6:30 PM

Jumpstart your resume writing with the expert advice of Ron Reed, president of the Long Island company Reed Résumés.
Through Zoom, Ron will give a presentation explaining best practices in resume formatting and offer insight from his professional experience as a recruiter as to what employers look for or see as red flags when reading a resume. The workshop will then move into an open discussion so you have time to ask specific questions.

Register in advance by clicking here. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. Email jsalvatore@sctylib.org with any questions.

Savvy Sightseer's Virtual Vacation
Back by popular demand -- four more 30-minute virtual vacations! Here's tour #3...
London!

London is a compact, vibrant city where modern and ancient sights coexist in an odd kind of synergy. Where else could you find a Gherkin and the Eye sharing a skyline with the venerable Westminster Abbey and Big Ben? We’ll also explore “hidden” spots including the newly opened Galleries of Westminster, and the secret bunker of Winston Churchill!

Email jsalvatore@sctylib.org by Friday, June 5 with the subject “London” to receive the video link available for you to view at your convenience.

Take 2: Austria: Salzburg & Vienna
There was a typo in last week’s blurb, so if you used the email link provided and had it bounce, please accept Jen’s apology.  You may still email jsalvatore@sctylib.org with the subject “Austria” to receive that video link.

From J.K. Rowling: The Ickabog

“The Ickabog will be published for free, in installments, over the next seven weeks, a chapter (or two, or three), at a time. It isn’t Harry Potter and it doesn’t include magic. This is an entirely different story."
Children can also enter an illustration contest for possible inclusion when the book is published!
