 Read a cozy mystery

What are cozy mysteries?

Cozy mysteries (nicknamed “cozies”) emerged as a counterpoint to hardboiled and noir detective fiction of the 1920s-30s. The adventures of Agatha Christie’s iconic Miss Marple exemplify what cozies are all about; a smart, observant amateur sleuth who lacks “official” authority nonetheless inserts themselves into the mystery at hand. Their lived experience or some other quality makes them uniquely perceptive within a colorful, close-knit community (the most common type of “cozy” setting).

What happens in cozy mysteries?

Because solving crimes is not part of their career, the sleuth must have a reason to get involved like being framed or clearing a friend’s name. Sleuths solve the crime by interviewing members of their community and putting together the clues. While there are twists and high stakes throughout the story, justice is always served (arrest and trial optional). Readers can expect a satisfying, positive ending.  When the crime is a murder, violence occurs off-stage; murder scenes may be described but with no graphic details. While cozy mysteries may touch upon serious issues, they avoid traumatizing and disturbing presentation. Cozies use little (if any) profanity and contain no explicit sex.  Cozy mysteries are often written in themed series and may have modern, historical, or even paranormal settings.

Why do readers like cozy mysteries?

Unlike other mystery subgenres, the crime itself is almost secondary. Cozy mysteries focus on memorable characters and relationships that often develop over a series and themes (like knitting or baking) that contribute to the story’s subplots. The sleuth’s lives, careers, and interests are described in detail. Avid fans often follow a series because they like the sleuth’s approach to solving crime and find their profession or subculture interesting.  Readers who enjoy a craft or hobby, for example, may enjoy stories about characters who share their interests. These cozies may incorporate actual recipes, project tips, and other extras from the author that readers can try for themselves. Readers may also enjoy being immersed in particular “cozy” communities or locations to absorb a setting while enjoying the mystery.  Additionally, readers who are uncomfortable with graphic violence appreciate knowing that they will not find any distressing details in a cozy mystery. They may appreciate knowing through the tense moments in the plot that their favorite characters (and/or their pets!) will be okay.
