Greening Richmond Public Libraries
In an effort to increase public awareness of storm water runoff and reduce it, the James River Association is working alongside Richmond Public Library, Richmond Department of Public Utilities/RVAH2O, and Four Winds Design to plan, design, and install green infrastructure that manages storm water at library branches across the City of Richmond. Since 2019, projects have been implemented at Broad Rock Branch, East End Branch, North Avenue Branch, West End Branch, and Westover Hills Branch.

Now, our Ginter Park Branch will be the latest location to GO GREEN! In an effort to reduce storm water runoff leaving library grounds, the team is seeking input on green infrastructure that could be added to library grounds. Your ideas will be shared with the Four Winds Design team and help inform the transformation of Ginter Park.

Please help us with this initiative by filling out this brief questionnaire.

Check It Out: Your Blood Pressure at the Library
Check It Out: Your Blood Pressure at the Library is a community-based initiative to reduce hypertension. Its goal is to increase awareness about blood pressure (BP) and BP control by meeting people where they are.

Seven of our branches have self-service BP stations as well as monthly BP screenings to help you and your loved ones know your numbers, learn about healthy lifestyles, and be connected or reconnected with primary care to support BP monitoring and control.

And, starting in March, Richmond Public Library cardholders will also be able to check out a BP monitoring kit for use at home. This newest tool, courtesy of the American Heart Association, will make monitoring your health even easier.

Moment of Calm
"Still I Rise"
By Maya Angelou
You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I’ll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
’Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.
Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I’ll rise.

Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops,
Weakened by my soulful cries?

Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don’t you take it awful hard
’Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines
Diggin’ in my own backyard.

You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.

Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I’ve got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?
Out of the huts of history’s shame
I rise
Up from a past that’s rooted in pain
I rise
I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.

Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.
