12 Days of Richmond Public Library
Richmond Public Library is your public library. Although books are in our DNA, public libraries of today are so much more. In the spirit of holiday giving, we are presenting (see what we did there?) a series of blog posts highlighting all of the resources available to you — in the library, or at home — to become a Richmond Public Library power user. All you need is a library card.

A Christmas Carol
Join us for this 30 minute outdoor performance extravaganza as two actors attempt the grueling and stage defying act of recreating Charles Dickens’s classic tale of redemption. The actors will transform themselves into multiple characters of all ages, gender and spectral variety, putting themselves in psychological harm's way as they expose their inner souls to the full range of emotions needed to transport their audience from laughter to pity to shock to love to despair to hope. The thespians will perform this feat of theatrical wizardry on the stage of the Virginia Theatre Machine with full production values: lights, sound, sets, props, puppets, costumes, & special effects. For ages 3-93. Standing room is available, or bring your own outdoor chair!

Moment of Calm
"To Winter"
By Claude McKay

Stay, season of calm love and soulful snows!
There is a subtle sweetness in the sun,
The ripples on the stream's breast gaily run,
The wind more boisterously by me blows,
And each succeeding day now longer grows.
The birds a gladder music have begun,
The squirrel, full of mischief and of fun,
From maples' topmost branch the brown twig throws.
I read these pregnant signs, know what they mean:
I know that thou art making ready to go.
Oh stay! I fled a land where fields are green
Always, and palms wave gently to and fro,
And winds are balmy, blue brooks ever sheen,
To ease my heart of its impassioned woe.
