"The New Normal New England Road Trip" with Ted Reinstein
Wednesday, March 10th at 7 p.m.
Go on a rollicking ride around New England—all in just one hour, and all from the comfort of your own home! Author of three books about New England and longtime “Chronicle” reporter Ted Reinstein is your tour guide as you go from Maine to Rhode Island, Mt. Washington to Mt. Mansfield, and Berkshire foliage to Fenway Park. But Ted’s 20-plus years of reporting and telling stories from all over New England means this is not your average bus tour. Prepare to meet colorful characters who’ve done the darndest things, learn odd facts about familiar places, and of course—this being a Ted talk—expect to visit at least a few fabulous classic diners. (Spoiler alert: Ted reveals where to find THE best clam chowdah in America—and it’s right here in New England!) Ted will take questions following the talk. Space is limited; please register through our online event page.
From Paint to Pen: Poems, Lyrics and the Art that Inspired Them
Wednesdays March 17th, 24th, and 31st at 3:15 p.m.
Sometimes great art inspires more great art! This webinar will take us on an exploration of how poets and lyricists interpret, respond to, and transform spectacular art into words (and sometimes music)! Each session we will get an overview of the artist, look at one or two amazing paintings, then read and discuss some poems and lyrics they inspired. Join popular presenter Roz Kubek in an entertaining March escape. Poems and lyrics will be provided to participants prior to each session for those who prefer to read ahead of time. To register and learn more about featured works and artists, visit our online event page.

Virtual Baby Yoga
Wednesdays March 3rd, 17th, and 31st at 10 a.m.
For ages 3 weeks to pre-crawlers and their grownups (approximate age range is 0-9 months). Baby Yoga is a class focused on gentle movement and developmentally-safe yoga poses for the babies! The parent assists the baby into easy folds and simple stretches timed with sweet songs and rhymes. The parent does little to no physical yoga themselves as these poses are solely focused on supporting the baby's growing body. Modifications and instruction are provided for a baby's particular developmental stage during the class to ensure that every sweet pea is practicing the poses designed just for that age and stage. Parents are encouraged to take breaks as needed during the class to nurse, feed, or change a diaper. Registration is required; sign up using Pollard Memorial Library's online form.
Virtual Family Yoga
Thursdays March 4th and 18th at 3 p.m.
For children ages 6-12 and their grownups. Sweet Pea Family Yoga is a special yoga class where adults and kids can develop their yoga practice in a joyful, interactive hour together! The poses are attuned to help kids learn yoga in a way that reflects their age, ability, and curiosity. Adults will enjoy the opportunity to learn alongside their children as we explore a variety of beneficial yoga postures for building strong bones, increasing body awareness and flexibility, and refining balance. This Family Yoga class is rooted in a classical style of learning yoga and the instruction is geared towards 6- to 12-year-olds—which adults can comfortably enjoy. We’ll integrate activities for developing mindfulness, practicing emotional resiliency, making healthy choices, breathing techniques, and kid-friendly meditation. No prior yoga experience is required by adult or child. Registration required; sign up using Pollard Memorial Library's online form.

Staff Pick

Kiki's Delivery Service by Eiko Kadono is a fun, feel good story about a young witch leaving home to find her place in the world. This book could be enjoyed by all, from young children reading with their parents to adults looking for a quick uplifting story. I read this book because the animated movie by Hayao Miyazaki is a favorite family film of mine, and it was really cool to get to read the story that inspired him.

Podcasts: Music for March

Noodle Loaf: “Video Playdate” (Ages 5-9)
Chock-full of interactive music play for young kids, Noodle Loaf is hosted by Dan Saks, a music educator and author. Each episode begins with the Noodle Loaf Choir, created from kid listeners sending in voice recordings. The opening songs set a gleeful mood for the fun that follows. This episode features a robot dance song to which kids can add their own sound effects, and a fill-in-the-blank song.
Classical Kids Storytime: “KinderLute” (Ages 7-12)
American Public Media, in concert with Classical Minnesota Public Radio (MPR), produces well-thought-out content for grade schoolers about classical music. In this episode, listeners are introduced to the orchestra through sound and storytelling. They meet four string instruments—violin, viola, cello, and bass—and learn about their sound, parts, and size. That’s followed by a warm-hearted, comical story in which the instruments have names and personalities, teaching young musicians why it is important to take care of instruments.
Bandtastic: “Mission 1: Seabass of Earth” (Ages 9-14)
The supergroup Bandtastic formed by recruiting musical prodigies from galactic realms across the universe, including Sebastian, a 12-year-old Earth boy who can play just about any instrument, including a pigeon. You get the idea…this is the wackiest, grooviest, most absurd sci-fi musical audio show for kids. The musical is five episodes long, with a bonus episode including song samples. Each episode builds on the next, so listeners should go in order to get the full story.
Song Exploder - Eric Nam: “Love Die Young” (Ages 13 & Up)
Each episode of Song Exploder explores the creation of a single piece of music. The show interviews the different creators, providing the backstory to both the band and song. In this episode, vocalist Eric Nam shares his Cinderella-like story of entering the K-Pop scene in Korea, which gave him a platform and the ability to hone his craft as an artist. He describes the trials and tribulations of moving from one international music scene to the next, sharing how his life journey has been shaped by being an immigrant and a Korean-American person. A modern tale of an inspiring, humble, and talented artist.
