Library books on shelves

Welcome!

Top Border of Fall Books and Leaves

Happy fall, and welcome to the first edition of Plumb Library's new Youth Services monthly newsletter! Subscribe to keep up to date on everything we have going on from birth through high school. October is an exciting month here, as we start all our new fall and after school programming!

First, a short introduction for those who may not have met me yet, or want to know more. I'm Ms. Fuchsia, and have been the Youth Services Librarian here at Plumb since last July. I have worked with children and teens in libraries, public schools, and shelter programs prior to landing in Rochester. My favorite childhood book was (and still is) Anne of Green Gables, and my favorite author is Tamora Pierce, who writes middle grade and young adult fantasy. I truly believe in the benefit of libraries and lifelong learning, and am happy to be building programs that get children excited about both. Now, with that said, let's take a look at October's programs!

Baby and Toddler Programs

Librarian Reading a Book to Group of Young Kids

Baby Storytime

Tuesdays at 10:30am

Ages 6-24 months

Register online weekly

Join us weekly for small group singing and movement, accompanied by board books that our littlest patrons can explore with their caregivers. This is followed by a short play session to encourage socialization skills at a young age.

Family Storytime

Wednesdays at 10:30am

Ages 2-5 years and siblings

Register online weekly

Following a different theme every week, we read a few short, engaging books together, sing songs and move around, and practice other literacy skills. This is always followed by a craft to tie in with the theme. Please register online to ensure we have enough crafts for everyone.

Preschool Storytime

Tuesdays at 1:30pm

Ages 4-5 years

Register online weekly

Designed specifically for children who are getting ready to enter school, this new offering is starting on October 6th. We read higher concept books compared to Family Storytime, as well as practice listening and writing skills, but continue to accompany them with fun songs to engage our young readers. This is followed by either a craft or early literacy activity pages. Please register online to ensure we have enough materials for everyone.

Elementary Aged Programs

Colorful Toy Blocks On Yellow Background

Take and Make Kits

No registration required

First come, first served

Stop by the library anytime we're open to pick up a craft kit! For the first half of the month, the kit provided is to make a tiny house from a toilet paper roll. There are so many different ways to decorate this, whether as a mushroom, a fairy house, a spooky haunted house... the possibilities are endless!

In the second half of the month, pick up a Halloween themed kit to make a hanging bat!

Lego Club

October 7 & 21 at 4:30pm

Ages 5+

No registration required

Join us on the first and third Wednesday of every month for our popular Lego Club! Children are encouraged to use their imaginations for free build by themselves or with other children. We provide all the bricks, they just need to bring their creativity!

Treasure Chest

Weekly

All Ages

No registration required

Every week, we have two opportunities to win prizes from the treasure chest. Find the hidden object in the library for one prize, and unscramble a secret word for another.

Teen and Tween Programs

Teen Room

Did you know that Plumb is getting a brand new teen room? Construction is finished and the furniture is starting to arrive! We're hoping to have the grand opening this month, so keep your eyes out for an announcement soon! I believe that it's very important for teens to have their own space in the library, so I'm excited to make this happen. As we get ready for its opening, I want to hear from teens to make this truly your own—what do you want for decor, activities, games? What programming do you want at Plumb? Let me know either by stopping in at the library and chatting with me, or filling out the contact form on our webpage.

Ghost Painting

Tuesday, October 27

4:00 PM - 5:30 PM

Ages 12-18

Registration required

Come to the library to make a unique Halloween decoration using thrifted paintings! We will be adding ghosts and other seasonal delights on top of existing artwork to make atmospheric creations. No experience or materials required, just come and choose a painting!

Registration required.

Teen D&D/TTRPG

Saturday, October 31

10:30 AM - 1:30 PM

Ages 12-18

Registration required

Join a group of adventurers as they fight monsters and solve mysteries in a Monster of the Week one-shot specially picked for Halloween! Protect the town as you play through the story, and finish with plenty of time before trick-or-treating. Feel free to come dressed as your TTRPG character, or just a costume you want to show off! (Costumes not required.)

Our TTRPG (tabletop role-playing game) group meets monthly, and is always beginner friendly. We will help you with character creation and gameplay questions, and have plenty of dice to borrow if you don't have your own.

Registration required; if you are unable to register in time, please contact Ms. Fuchsia by calling the library.
