Weekly Round-Up
Building community by sharing the wonders of learning, creating and connecting with one another.

Hello South Country Community,

Below is this week's roundup of information and resources that we feel would be useful to our patrons. If you follow our Facebook Page and keep track of updates to our website, you may have seen most of this information already, but we encourage you to browse through in case you missed something.

This first roundup is long, so we've split it into two major sections. The top half is Staying Stable, and is all about continuing to meet your basic needs during this uncertain time. This includes information on COVID-19 testing, food assistance, money issues, health insurance, day care, and utilities (please share with your neighbors who don't have internet).

The bottom half is Leisure & Learning. Depending on your situation, you and your family may suddenly have many unoccupied hours. Look here for access to ebooks, audiobooks, and many video resources including story times, movies, and past concerts at South Country Library.

Before we start with Staying Stable, there are a few pieces of info we want you to see right at the top:

South Country Library's Coronavirus Information & Resource Page
Updated daily with important information and resources. Feel free to bookmark it and check back!

If someone you know in the area isn't signed up for these emails, please forward this to them! They can sign up for future roundups here. Whatever they check off, they'll get these weekly round-ups.

And finally, Governor Cuomo has enacted new restrictions that go into effect Sunday at 8:00 pm. "Under the rules, nonessential gatherings of people of any size or for any reason are canceled or postponed." The only exception are essential businesses, which include "health facilities, utilities, airports, food makers, grocery stores, farms, convenience stores, laundromats, funeral homes and banks."

We're thinking of you all, and hope you're well. We'll check in with you next week.

Taxes, Unemployment, and Business

The federal government has extended the Federal tax filing and payment deadline to July 15, 2020 (there has been no announcement yet for New York State taxes). The government does encourage everyone to file as soon as they are able. To that end, we would like to remind you of the Free File option available at IRS.gov.

The waiting period for unemployment has been temporarily waived. If an individual loses their job, they should call 1-888-209-8124 and file a claim for Unemployment benefits.

If you run a small business, visit our Coronavirus Resource page for helpful links under "Taxes and Business".

Health Insurance

If you do not have health insurance, New York State has opened a special enrollment period through April 15. You can browse health plan options and sign you and your family up here. Note that if you are eligible for Medicaid, the Essential Plan, or Child Health Plus, you can enroll year-round.

Day Care

Some Day Care and Child Care Facilities remain open -- these are businesses deemed essential by the NY Office of Children & Family Services. Day Care centers that are still open have implemented procedures to protect their staff and children. If you are in need of Day Care for your child, you can call the Child Care Council of Suffolk Parent Counselors at 631-462-0303 to find available slots.
