Halloween Costume Swap

Swaps Accepted October 2 through 28

Next month, participate in our costume swap. Swap out a gently used costume with a new-to-you costume. You can also grab a costume, free of charge, compliments of all the generous folks who donated last year.

All (human) sizes available! 

So, be sure to visit the library through the month of October and see what’s new on the rack! Sizes and availability subject to change.

Not-So-Scary Halloween Story Time

Once you get a costume, gear up for our not-so-scary Halloween Story Time happening Tuesday, October 24 at 10AM. Bring your buckets as there will be trick-or-treat at the desks to follow. While supplies last.

Upcoming Events

Join us for a presentation with South Shore Astronomical Society's Astronomer of the Year 2022, Stephen LaFlamme. Hear about his passion for backyard astronomy, the story of his home dome and view many of his celestial images. All attendees will receive solar eclipse safe viewing glasses compliments of SEAL. No registration required.

Marietta Apollonio will be reading, drawing, and leading some cat-tastic art fun to celebrate the launch of her new book Jack the Library Cat. This program is recommended for ages 3+.

Tale Spinners Writing Group

Thursday, October 12 at 1:00PM

Tale Spinners have existed for nearly twenty years and is open to all. The Tale Spinners meet every Thursday, year round, from 1-3 PM in the Mary Jarvis Conference Room.

The Tale Spinners encourage all sorts of writing: memoir, poetry, short stories, and/or novels. The Tale Spinners write in all genres: mystery, thrillers, science fiction, romance, humor. We engage in gentle, helpful, and encouraging critiques of one another’s writing, and everyone gets a chance to share their work. We ask each writer to come with copies of his/her work for the rest of the group to write their comments and suggestions upon.

Lego Free Build

Registration opens on Wednesday, October 4 at 9 AM

In this workshop participants will learn 10 guidelines to be more successful when communicating, guiding, and supporting persons who are on the autism spectrum or neurodiverse.

They will also be familiarized with types of autism, and the current view of what the spectrum means. We will explore the social and communication skills and tools that can be implemented to become more inclusive of those individuals on the spectrum.

This workshop is presented by Laurette Ryan NCPT and Frankie Ryan. Owner of Balancepoint Pilates Teacher Training with satellite programs in Massachusetts and North Carolina since 1999, Laurette Ryan is a national fitness presenter, CEC provider for PMA, AFAA and NASM, and has taught movement classes and provided continuing education for fitness professionals for over 35 years. Frankie Ryan is a 24-year-old young woman on the Autism spectrum. She is a passionate advocate, educating the public in the challenges that face the neurodiverse community. Her unique perspective and personal experience is a valued addition to the science presented.

Artist Reception: Jill Law

Drop by to meet artist Jill Law, whose art exhibit Paradox will be on display throughout the month of October.

About the Exhibit

Paradox, by definition, is contradiction. Something made up of opposites that seem impossible but are actually true. Is this the beginning of the end or the end of the beginning? In this collection of work, one will see the precarious balance between representational and abstract expressions. Often this journey is a contradiction that comes together in the end. The exhibition will include paintings using various mediums, digital and analog photographs, and sketches that show the process.

About the Artist

Jill Law is an award-winning abstract painter, photographer, and sculptor in addition to being a professional Interior Designer. Her paintings focus on the bridge between representational and abstract imagery using a variety of mediums such as acrylics, oils, pastels, resins, charcoal, and graphite. Jill’s photography is often shown as expressions of an abstract nature capturing everyday objects and compositions not commonly observed. She produces digital imagery as well as developing and printing black and white darkroom work. Her sculptural work is created with clay to produce realistic figure sculptures of various scales. Jill is an elected member of the National Association of Women Artists. She is the present Board Chair for the South Coast Artists, a past president, and has been a member since 2013. Jill is a founding member, past president, and current Gallery Director of the Dartmouth Cultural Center. She has taught abstract painting classes and workshops at the Cultural Center for the past five years. A former executive chef of over two decades, she has operated an interior design and art studio, J Law Design, out of her home for the past 25 years. A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design Interior design certificate program, she is a lifelong learner. Jill is currently attending the Fine Arts Transfer degree program at Bristol Community College. She will transfer to the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth BFA program in January of 2024. Her artwork has been exhibited nationally in numerous juried exhibitions.
