From the Director's Desk Happy February! While February is the shortest month of the year, we are never short on fun events at the library. Feeling romantic? Stop by and take a Blind Date With a Book, send a Valentine to your favorite library, or read a romantic eBook through RomanceCloud. The Spice Club will be exploring the sweetness of vanilla extract and teens can make a yarn wrapped heart. We are also happy to offer two virtual author chats this month in collaboration with the Tewkesbury Public Library. We also invite new members to join our two monthly book clubs. Remember that during this stormy season you should always be prepared by stocking up with books, dvds, and more from the library!

For the whole month of February, we will have our special, favorite display in the library with a wide variety of books, wrapped up like your favorite Valentine’s Day present! You won’t know the ‘identity’ of your blind date till you get it home, however there may be some hints as to who your date is…Will it be fiction or non-fiction? Funny, informative, a mystery, true-crime, a memoir, or even a Graphic Novel? The possibilities are endless. You may choose any wrapped book in our “Blind Date with a Book” display. Also included with the books is a fun questionnaire asking you to Rate Your Date. Was your date disastrous or incredible? We want to know! Please fill it out and return it either with the book or to the reference desk.

Virtual Author Talk - In Conversation with Nicholas BasbanesWednesday, February 16th, 7:00-8:00PMMansfield Public Library is excited to join Tewksbury Public Library, who will be hosting a virtual author talk with Nicholas Basbanes for a discussion of his newest book, Cross of Snow: A Life of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow! **PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A VIRTUAL PROGRAM THAT WILL TAKE PLACE VIA ZOOM. Registrants will receive a link to access the Zoom Meeting via email.** How To Register: Register HERE. About The Author: Nicholas A. Basbanes, a Lowell native, is an award-winning investigative journalist and was literary editor of the Worcester Sunday Telegram. His articles have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Smithsonian. He is the author of eight books. Basbanes lives in North Grafton. About the Book: In Cross of Snow, the result of more than twelve years of research, including access to never-before-examined letters, diaries, journals, notes, Nicholas Basbanes reveals the life, the times, the work, and the soul of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow -- the man who shaped the literature of a new nation with his countless poems, sonnets, stories, essays, translations, and whose renown was so wide-reaching that his deep friendships included Charles Dickens, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Julia Ward Howe, and Oscar Wilde. Basbanes writes of the shaping of Longfellow's character, his huge body of work that included translations of numerous foreign works, among them, the first rendering into a complete edition by an American of Dante's Divine Comedy. We see Longfellow's two marriages, both happy and contented, each cut short by tragedy. His first to Mary Storer Potter that ended in the aftermath of a miscarriage, leaving Longfellow devastated. His second marriage to the brilliant Boston socialite--Fanny Appleton, after a three-year pursuit by Longfellow, and his emergence as a literary force and a man of letters. This event is hosted by the Tewksbury Public Library in collaboration with many other Massachusetts Public Libraries.

Virtual Author Talk - In Conversation with Larry TyeTuesday, February 22nd, 6:00-7:00PMMansfield Public Library is excited to join Tewksbury Public Library, who will be hosting a virtual author talk with Larry Tye for a discussion of his newest book, Demagogue: The Life and Long Shadow of Senator Joe McCarthy! Tye will be joined in conversation by Eileen McNamara, a Brandeis Journalism Professor, Pulitzer Prize winner, and author of Eunice: The Kennedy Who Changed The World. **PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A VIRTUAL PROGRAM THAT WILL TAKE PLACE VIA ZOOM. Registrants will receive a link to access the Zoom Meeting via email.** How To Register: Register HERE. About The Author: Larry Tye is the best-selling author of Bobby Kennedy and Satchel, as well as Superman, The Father of Spin, Home Lands, and Rising from the Rails, and coauthor, with Kitty Dukakis, of Shock. Previously an award-winning reporter and national writer at the Boston Globe and a Nieman fellow at Harvard University, he now runs the Boston-based Health Coverage Fellowship. Learn more about Tye HERE. About the Book: Demagogue is the definitive biography of the most dangerous demagogue in American history, based on exclusive access to his papers and recently unsealed transcripts of his closed-door Congressional hearings. In the long history of American demagogues, never has one man caused so much damage in such a short time as Senator Joseph McCarthy. We still use “McCarthyism” to stand for outrageous charges of guilt by association, a weapon of polarizing slander. From 1950 to 1954, McCarthy destroyed many careers and even entire lives, whipping the nation into a frenzy of paranoia, accusation, loyalty oaths, and terror. His chaotic, meteoric rise is a gripping and terrifying object lesson for us all. Yet his equally sudden fall from fame offers hope that, given the rope, most American demagogues eventually hang themselves. Only now, through best-selling author Larry Tye’s look at the senator’s records, can the full story be told. This event is hosted by the Tewksbury Public Library in collaboration with many other Massachusetts Public Libraries.
