September 2025 Happenings @ the APL!
Books, movies, games, & SO MUCH MORE. YOUR library has something for everyone!
Letter from the Director
Has the library felt different to you lately? There are a lot of changes going on behind the scenes! If you follow us on Facebook or come to library events you know that Darcie Schillinger has been promoted to Assistant Director! We've kept her too busy to write up an intro for the newsletter so I have the honor of introducing this familiar face.
Many of you know Darcie from the Reference team where she has been working as the Adult Services Librarian. In this role she was choosing fiction titles for the library and planning adult programs from crafternoons to book groups and much more. This summer she quadrupled the number of participants in the Adult Summer Reading program! She also hosted the enormously successful, first After Hours Library Party. When she gets settled in her new role, she'll be using her trademark warmth, grace and problem solving skills to keep the library running smoothly.
In addition to several staff changes, we're planning the Community Read, overcoming technology challenges and prepping for December's flooring replacement. We'd like to slow down and take a breath after a very busy summer, but the school year is starting and we can not wait to welcome students and staff back into the building.
Whether you are spending the end of August on the beach in flip flops or ordering a pumpkin coffee dreaming of corduroy, I hope you stop by the library and say hello. You'll be happy you did!

Bite by Bite: Celebrating Community by Breaking Bread
Bite by Bite: Nourishments and Jamborees
Bite by Bite by Aimee Nezhukumatathil, the 2025 Community Read title, was chosen for its broad appeal to both reluctant readers and avid book lovers. In this collection of short essays, the author shares vivid memories tied to a variety of foods, their origins, their preparations, and the people the foods were shared with. This title sets the perfect table for creative expression of personal identity and beloved cultural traditions. Guest speakers, workshops, and events held in partnership with local organizations, restaurants and businesses will give community members the opportunity to connect with one another at a shared table.

The Museum has scooped up Nezhukumatathil’s vignette on “shave ice” as the inspiration for Frost Bite: Memories Masquerading as Frozen Treats.
The author’s reflections on a shave ice in Oahu has inspired artists, all from the Seekonk Artist Network, working in an assortment of disciplines. From the siren song of an ice cream truck, to deciding on which pretty flavor to fill your paper cup – Frost Bite will explore experiences, identities, milestones, family, neighborhoods and sensory triggers that will surely resonate with gallery goers and spark wonderful conversations.
Bite By Bite: Nourishments and Jamborees is an illustrated, lyrical memoir told in short essays by Mississippi-based poet, essayist, and National Endowment for the Arts fellow Aimee Nezhukumatathil about 40 different kinds of food that evoke her memories of childhood, friendships, travel, family, and connections to nature and the cultures of the Philippines and India, where her parents are from.

September is Library Card Sign Up Month
Why Teens LOVE Their Library Cards!
For teens, a library card is more than just a way to borrow books—it’s the key to free entertainment, learning, and discovery. In preparation for Library Card Sign Up Month, Mrs. Witherell asked local teens what they love about their library cards. Their thoughtful answers follow:
As one teen puts it, "My library card gives me access to so much more than shelves of books. I can borrow games, stream movies and music, and even use online learning tools, all for free. It’s amazing how one small card can open the door to so many ways to learn and have fun.” -J. F.
Another shares, "I love my library card because it gives me the opportunity to find different books to read by my favorite authors." -S.B.
Your library card can even make school easier: "My library card has been a lifesaver during school, because it helps me gain access to study resources without spending a dime. For students (or any people) who are lower income or just want to save money, having a library card is amazing in numerous ways due to the access it offers. My life would be a lot more difficult without it!" -I.I.
And perhaps most powerfully: "My library card is more than just a piece of plastic, it's an entrance to endless adventures and knowledge. It unlocks worlds within books, music, fun games, and films, all for free. It's a treasure I am able to keep in my pocket!" -J.C.
Stop by the library this month and sign up for your card—it’s free, it’s easy, and it opens the door to so much more than you might expect.

September 6 is National Read a Book Day
There are so many great things to celebrate in September—Labor Day, Back to School, Talk Like a Pirate Day—but one of my favorites falls on September 6 and is National Read a Book Day! I have always loved to read and enjoy helping others discover books to fall in love with. The easiest way to celebrate this “holiday” is to read a book! Stuck at what to read next? You can always ask a library staff member, or you can use Novelist K-8 Plus (access is free with your library card) to find books that are just right for individual reading levels and interests. What types of books does your child like to read? Are they ready to try something new? By browsing this easy-to-use database, families can find thousands of titles for readers baby-teen. Families can find the link in the databases drop-down menu under the Children’s tab on the APL website. Have fun discovering new books and happy reading!
Krystal Brown is the Head of Children’s Services at the APL. She is available to answer questions, recommend books and introduce families to resources. Stop by the Children’s Room desk or email kbrown@sailsinc.org to chat

Below is a sampling of this month's events. All library programs can be found on the Events calendar!
Meet Stephanie, Adult Services Librarian
Stephanie Halcomb has been working at the Attleboro Public Library for over four years. You may have seen her at the circulation or reference desks in the past. As the new Adult Services Librarian, you will generally find her at the second floor Reference desk. Make sure to wave or say “Hi” next time you’re in!
Stephanie was an educator for over 10 years, teaching in Seattle and Atlanta before coming to the Attleboro Library. "I absolutely love being a librarian here at the APL! I have always been a big reader, devouring books from many genres. I tend to choose books depending on my mood. Most recently I have been on a non-fiction streak. I love to talk about books, no matter the genre, so make sure to check in."
In her new role she will be available to recommend books to match patron interests. She will be creating engaging and timely displays, buying adult fiction in a variety of formats, and creating adult programs. If there are titles that you are interested in seeing on our shelves or programs you would like to see hosted at the APL, she'd love to hear from you!
The following books are among Stephanie's current favorites to recommend.
T.J. Klune
A sci-fi book about growth, acceptance, love, and chosen family. This is a comfort read I go back to time and again.
Deanna Raybourn
A mystery/thriller about force-retired female assassins who at 60 years young, they aren’t past their prime. A real page turner with characters you root for.
Alison Espach
A fiction book about an unexpected wedding guest who becomes the bride’s confidante. This book did not go where I thought it would, and I loved every minute.
