The Dighton Public Library is looking forward to several exciting partnerships as part of our May programming schedule. We are pleased to offer free Spanish classes in through a collaboration with Global Hearts Learning. This series consists of three Friday sessions beginning on May 8th for anybody interested in learning Spanish. This series is open to adults of all ages and experience levels, so please call the Library to reserve your spot. The Library is also excited to welcome Stacy Entel of Heart Beets Farm for a special Meet Your Farmer program on Saturday May 2nd. For those looking for a creative outlet, we will also be hosting a special felt figurine craft night on May 7th led by local artist Miss Jen. Local author, illustrator, and art teacher Carla Marrero will be at the Library on Saturday May 16th as a guest reader for a special story time with her cat-themed children's books. Cooking Club will meet on May 21st with a theme of Mexican food in honor of Cinco de Mayo. In collaboration with the Taunton River Watershed Alliance, we will be offering a nature photography class on May 14th, and a Taunton River watercolor class on May 21st. Speaking of nature, there is still time to enter our May wildlife photo contest, so be sure to submit your photos no later than May 1st to enter. Don't forget to check our calendar to see everything else coming up in May. Please note that the Library will be closed on Monday May 25th for Memorial Day.
 
May Programs
Spanish Classes
Have you ever wanted to learn some Spanish? The Library is pleased to partner with Global Hearts Learning and offer a three week series of Spanish classes Friday afternoons from 3:00 to 4:00 on May 8th, May 15th, and May 22nd. Global Hearts Learning designs these sessions to be fun, friendly, and geared towards adults of all experience levels. The sessions are free to attend, but registration is required. Please call the Library at (508) 669-6421 to reserve your seat. Presented by the Friends of the Dighton Public Library.
 
Meet Your Farmer
Would you like to know more about farming on the Southcoast from an actual farmer? Did you know that many of these farms grow vegetables all year round? Stop by the Program Room on Saturday May 2nd at 11:00 and chat with Stacy Entel, one of the farmers from Heart Beets Farm, a certified organic farm right next door in Berkley! Attendees will get to try some of what is in season right now and learn more about the gifts and challenges of present-day agriculture in New England. This program is free to attend, and no registration is required.

Felt Figurine Craft Night
Join special guest Miss Jen for a craft night in the Program Room on Thursday May 7th at 6:00 in the Program Room and create a sheep figurine by needle felting! Miss Jen will teach all participants about the wool, how it works, and the tools needed to craft a felted figurine. This program is free to attend, and all materials will be provided. Registration is required, so please call the Library at (508) 669-6421 to reserve your spot.
 
Intro to Nature Photography
Do you like nature? Do you like to take photographs when you are outside? Then come to the Program Room on Thursday May 14th at 6:00 to learn photography skills for all devices ranging from iPhones to DSLR! The session will practice photography skills and wrap up with a group skills-sharing discussion. This program is free to attend and open to all ages and abilities. Registration is required, so please call the Library at (508) 669-6421 to reserve your spot. Presented in collaboration with the Taunton River Watershed Alliance.
 
Story Time with Carla Marrero

Local author and illustrator Carla Marrero will be visiting the Library on Saturday May 16th at 12:30 in the Program Room for a very special story time with her cat-themed children's books. This story time is free to attend, and no registration is required.
Taunton River Watercolor Class
Join local artist and environmental educator Devin McLaughlin in the Program Room on Thursday May 21st at 6:00 to learn how to paint a watercolor of a local scene of the Taunton River. In addition to sharing artistic knowledge, Devin will also teach participants about the ecology and history of the Taunton River. This program is free to attend and open to artists of all ages and ability levels. Registration is required, so please call the Library at (508) 669-6421 to reserve your seat. Presented in collaboration with the Taunton River Watershed Alliance.

Traveling Book Group
Join the Traveling Book Group and travel around the world through books. This month, the book club will follow the life of a true crime podcaster by reading None of This is True by Lisa Jewell for discussion on Thursday May 28th in the Reading Room at 6:00. Copies of the book are available at the Library. The Traveling Book Group meets on the last Thursday of each month, and anybody interested is welcome to attend.
 
Needlework Night
The first Thursday of each month is Needlework Night. Bring all your knitting, crochet, and needlework projects on Thursday May 7th at 6:00 and be among fellow needlepoint enthusiasts to trade tips and work together. There will be needlepoint teachers on hand to help instruct those looking to learn new skills. Needlework night is free to attend. All levels of experience are welcome, and no registration is required.

Cooking Club
Mexican Food Items
The Cooking Club's next meeting will be on Thursday May 21st at 3:00 in the Program Room. The Club meets on the third Thursday of each month with a different theme each meeting. May's theme will be Mexican Food in honor of Cinco de Mayo. Anybody interested in participating should register in advance by calling the Library at (508) 669-6421 and can use our A to Z World Foods database available on our website for recipe ideas. Participants will be notified one week prior to each meeting how many servings they should bring. Participants should also bring copies of the recipe to share with each other.
 
Mah Jongg Club
Calling all American Mah Jongg mavins! The Mah Jongg Club meets every Thursday at the Library from 5:00-7:00 in the Teen Room. All are welcome from every experience level ages 13 and up, and no registration required.

Join Ms. Lorie Mondays and Tuesdays at 10:30 in May for songs, stories, and finger-plays for children between the ages of 18 months and 3 years.
Wednesday Movies
 
Every Wednesday at 6:00 we will show a movie. Each child will receive tickets to claim a drink and snacks. The May listings are below. Visit the calendar to see the full lineup.
Homeschool Group
 
Are you a homeschool family? Then visit the Program Room every Wednesday at 1:00. Miss Lorie will read a chapter book and then lead a craft.

Wildlife Photo Contest: Begins May 1st

Take the time this month to e-mail a wildlife photograph to Ms. Lorie and enter our May photo contest. The pictures will be laminated and then hung along the ramp leading up to the Children's Section. Each photograph will be given a number so that everyone can vote for their favorite wildlife photo.
 
Rules:
  • Include the name and age of the photographer.
  • E-mail the picture so it can be printed as an 8x10.
  • Pictures must be submitted by May 1st.
  • Voting will begin on May 1st and end on June 1st.
  • You can vote every time you visit the Children's Section.
 
Prizes will be awarded to the winning Child's photo and Adult's photo!

Next Meeting
The next meeting of the Friends of the Dighton Public Library will be on Thursday May 14th at 4:30 in the Library's Reading Room.
 
All are welcome, and we always welcome new friends. All you really need to do is love the library and join us for a few meetings a year to help brainstorm and plan great events! 
 
Fourth Annual Golf Tournament
 
The Friends Fourth Annual Golf Tournament will be on Sunday October 4th at Swansea Country Club. More information will follow, so stay tuned for more details on this fundraiser. Registration information should be out no later than June 1st. Stay Tuned!

The Friends of the Dighton Public Library now has its own website. Looking for something to do with the kids during Memorial Day weekend? The Friends sponsor many discount museum passes for a variety of zoos and museums, including the USS Constitution Museum, the Museum of Science, the Hall at Patriot Place, and many others, including our newest pass for the RISD Museum.
