Summer is here, so that means Summer Reading is officially underway. Children can sign up for the Read to Bead program with Miss Lorie with scratch tickets for a whole host of great prizes, while adults can pick up a BINGO sheet from Laura the Librarian. Speaking of Laura the Librarian, she will be hosting a paint night on July 23rd, so call the Library to register if you are interested. On June 9th, the Library will welcome author Michael Dyer for a talk focused on the Navy and the history of our nation's maritime culture. Author and filmmaker Ronny LeBlanc comes to Dighton on July 16th to discuss UFOs and recent disclosure documents. For those looking for a creative way to celebrate the 250th, the Cooking Club will meet on July 16th and focus on colonial recipes. We will also be hosting a felting craft with Miss Jenn on July 23rd. Miss Lorie starts her weekly summer bird walks on July 6th, and the Dighton Lions Club will be sponsoring a Free Plant Day on July 11th. Local author Sandra Ginalski will be at the Library on July 23rd for a special story time focused on her recently published children's books. Speaking of Children's, we have a full slate of activities planned from movie matinees on Mondays and Fridays, to Wednesday afternoon craft activities consisting of tye-dye t-shirts, slime day, an escape room, and game day. Don't forget to check our calendar to see everything we have planned in July, and be on the lookout for information regarding the Friends Annual Golf Tournament. Registration begins July 1st. Please note that the Library will be closed on Friday July 3rd and Saturday July 4th in celebration of Independence Day. |

All Hands: Yankee Whaling and the United States Navy |

Join author, scholar, and curator of maritime history Michael P. Dyer on Thursday July 9th at 6:00 in the Program Room as he offers a new interpretation of an important theme in American history: the intersections between the United States whaling industry and the United States Navy. From South America to the Indian Ocean, across the Pacific and into the waters of Siberia and Alaska, whalers along with the Navy helped establish a core American maritime cultural identity around the world. This presentation is a direct result of the study of three-dimensional objects, maritime documents, fine arts, decorative arts, and cartography. This program is free to attend and no registration is required. |

Stop by the Library all day from 10:00 to 2:00 on Saturday July 11th and pick up a free plant. The plants are courtesy of the Dighton Lions Club as they help raise awareness for their food bank held every third Saturday of each month at Town Hall. Plants will be available while supplies last. |

Join the Nonfiction Book Club and read a different subject each month. This month, the book club will read about genealogy by reading It's All Relative by A. J. Jacobs for discussion on Saturday July 25th at 12:00 in the Reading Room. Copies of the book are available at the Library. The Nonfiction Book Club meets on the fourth Saturday of each month, and anybody interested is welcome. |

Join the Traveling Book Club and travel around the world through books! This month, the book club will follow the story of Evie Porter, a young woman who seemingly has the perfect Southern life, including a doting boyfriend and beautiful home, by reading First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston for discussion on Thursday July 30th at 6:00 in the Reading Room. Copies of the book are available at the Library. The Traveling Book Club meets on the last Thursday of each month, and anybody interested is welcome. |

The first Thursday of each month is Needlework Night. Bring all your knitting, crochet, and needlework projects on Thursday July 2nd at 6:00 and be among fellow needlepoint enthusiasts to trade tips and work together. There will be needlepoint teachers on hand to help instruct those looking to learn new skills. Needlework night is free to attend. All levels of experience are welcome, and no registration is required. |

The Cooking Club's next meeting will be on Thursday July 16th at 3:00 in the Program Room. The Club meets on the third Thursday of each month with a different theme each meeting. July's theme will be recipes from colonial times in honor of our country's 250th. Anybody interested in participating should register in advance by calling the Library at (508) 669-6421 and are welcome to use Old Sturbridge Village's recipe guide for inspiration. Participants will be notified one week prior to each meeting how many servings they should bring. Participants should also bring copies of the recipe to share. |

Bring a pair of binoculars, wear some comfortable shoes, and join Miss Lorie for a Bird Walk every Monday morning at 7:30 beginning on July 6th. Each Monday will explore a different place. There will be extra binoculars and a birding scope for everybody to use along with Sibley's bird books for reference. Summer Reading Begins June 27th! Children are invited to sign up for the Read to Bead program. They will get a chain with a tag of their choice plus they can pick out a colored bead for every 15 minutes they spend reading. For every five hours, children will earn a scratch ticket to win special prize. Every scratch ticket is a winner, so there are plenty of cool prizes available for everybody! |

Next Meeting The next meeting of the Friends of the Dighton Public Library will be on Thursday August 6th at 4:30 in the Library's Reading Room. All are welcome, and we always welcome new friends. All you really need to do is love the library and join us for a few meetings a year to help brainstorm and plan great events! |
