October is almost here, and that means Halloween is right around the corner. Join author and paranormal researcher Dustin Pari on October 8th for a special presentation on the haunted history of Halloween. We are also hosting a children's Halloween party on October 29th, and don't forget to stop by the Library on October 31st in full costume to pick up some treats. For those looking for a creative outlet, the Library is hosting Needlework Night on October 1st, and Jennifer from Cottage Dots will lead a mandala dot art workshop on October 15th, so call the Library at (508) 669-6421 to reserve your spot. Our pet photo contest begins on October 1st, so don't forget to e-mail your photos to Miss Lorie by October 1st in order to enter, and don't forget to vote for your favorite photo when you visit the Library. Cooking Club meets on October 15th with the theme of sweet and savory pies. Our Thursday morning yoga series runs until October 15th, so call the Library if you are interested in signing up. October is also the height of canning season, so we are offering an intro to canning program on October 22nd for participants to learn all about how to can foods on their own. The next meeting of the Friends is September 30th at 4:30 in the Reading Room, and all are welcome to attend. Speaking of the Friends, they will have a table at the October 11th Arts Festival where you can purchase tickets to win any of their amazing raffle baskets. The friends will also have a tree at the Festival of Trees at Araujo Farms beginning on October 11th, and they will be starting their annual gift card gift fundraiser on October 31st. Please note that the Library will be closed on Monday October 12th, and don't forget to check our calendar to see everything we have coming up at the Library during the month of October.

Halloween: A Haunted History

Mandala Dot Art Canvas Pouch Workshop

Join Miss Julie from Cottage Dots on Thursday October 15th at 5:30 in the Program Room to paint a custom zippered 8.5'' x 5'' canvas pouch in either Halloween or breast cancer awareness colors. Mandala dot art is a form of painting that uses intricate patterns made entirely of colorful dots often arranged in circular, symmetrical designs. Inspired by traditional mandalas, this creative art style is both relaxing and meditative and is popular for stress relief. This program is free to attend, and all supplies will be provided. Registration is required, so call the Library at (508) 669-6421 to reserve your spot.

Curious about canning but not sure where to start? Stop by the Library on Thursday October 22nd at 6:00 in the Program Room for a beginner-friendly introduction to home canning. We will talk briefly about the science behind canning: what makes food and supplies shelf-stable and why method and timing matter in addition to walking through different canning methods while explaining when each one is used. Every attendee will take home a handout of processing times and methods for future reference along with a pressure-canned jar containing sterile water and a washcloth. This program is free to attend, and no prior canning experience is needed. All supplies and equipment will be provided, so call the Library at (508) 669-6421 to reserve your spot.

Join the Nonfiction Book Club and read about a different subject each month. This month, the book club will explore the history of cell biology and how our understanding of cells transformed modern medicine by reading The Song of the Cell: An Exploration of Medicine and the New Human by Siddhartha Mukherjee for discussion on Saturday October 24th at 12:00 in the Reading Room. Copies of the book are available at the Library. The Nonfiction Book Club meets on the fourth Saturday of each month, and anybody interested is welcome.

Join the Traveling Book Club and travel around the world through books! This month, the book club will travel to 18th century Maine and follow a murder investigation by reading The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon for discussion on Thursday October 29th at 6:00 in the Reading Room. Copies of the book are available at the Library. The Traveling Book Club meets on the last Thursday of each month, and anybody interested in joining is welcome to attend.

The first Thursday of each month is Needlework Night. Bring all your knitting, crochet, and needlework projects on Thursday October 1st at 6:00 and be among fellow needlepoint enthusiasts to trade tips and work together. There will be needlepoint teachers on hand to help instruct those looking to learn new skills. Needlework night is free to attend. All levels of experience are welcome, and no registration is required.

The Cooking Club's next meeting will be on Thursday October 15th at 3:00 in the Program Room. The Club meets on the third Thursday of each month with a different theme each meeting. October's theme will be "pies: sweet or savory." Anybody interested in participating should register in advance by calling the Library at (508) 669-6421. Participants will be notified how many servings they should bring and should also bring copies of their recipes.

Calling all American Mah Jongg mavins! The Mah Jongg Club meets every Thursday at the Library from 5:00-7:00 in the Teen Room. All are welcome from every experience level ages 13 and up, and no registration required.

Going out trick-or-treating for Halloween? Don't forget to stop by the Library during our open hours of 10:00 to 2:00 on Saturday October 31st. We will have plenty of treats and to go around for anybody wearing their costumes!

The Library will be hosting a preschool Halloween Party on Thursday October 29th at 1:00 in the Children's Section and Program Room. Join us in your costumes for games, challenges, and a chance to go trick or treating around the Library. Allergy friendly snacks will be available.

Pet Photo Contest Begins October 1st
|
|
E-mail your cute, funny, or unusual pet photo to Miss Lorie to enter the October pet photo contest. The pictures will be laminated and then hung along the ramp leading up to the Children's Section. Each photo will be given a number so that everyone can vote for their favorite pet photo. Photo entries will also appear on Dighton Public Access Channel 95, so look for them there as well. Rules:- Include the name of the pet, name of the person entering the photo, and the age of the photographer.
- E-mail the picture so it can be printed as an 8x10.
- Each child can submit a photo of a pet.
- Pictures must be submitted by October 1st.
- Voting will begin on October 1st and end on November 1st.
- You can vote every time you visit the Children's Section.
Prizes will be awarded to the winning Child's photo and Adult's photo!

Next Meeting The next meeting of the Friends of the Dighton Public Library will be their Annual Meeting on Wednesday September 30th at 4:30 in the Library Reading Room. All are welcome, and we always welcome new friends. All you really need to do is love the library and join us for a few meetings a year to help brainstorm and plan great events!

Stop by the Dighton Lions Club Arts Festival on Sunday October 11th (rain date on Monday October 12th) from 9:00 to 3:00 and visit The Friends' table. The Friends will have raffle baskets and raffle tickets available for purchase with the opportunity to win some great prizes! All proceeds raised as part of the raffle will go towards the Friends as we fulfill our mission to support the Library.
