Renovations on our new Library remain on track for a Grand Opening at some point this September, and CLICK HERE if you want to see a behind the scenes walk-through. If you have been following all the renovation updates on historic 207 Main Street, then you will not want to miss Pat Gailes, Chair of the Dighton Historic Commission, who will be speaking about the history of Smith Memorial Hall on Thursday June 26th at 6:30 at Old Town Hall. This talk is free to attend and no registration is required. We are also excited to announce that Summer Reading begins on June 24th, and we are once again doing the Read to Bead program in addition to providing scratch tickets for children to win a whole host of great prizes. We are also offering a summer reading BINGO program for adults, so anybody interested can pick up a BINGO sheet at the Modular Unit at the end of the month. Our Children's Section will also be hosting summer craft activities every Monday afternoon in July and August, so don't forget to check our calendar once that schedule is posted. Speaking of our Children's Section, there is still time to submit a wildlife photo by e-mail to Miss Lorie for entry in our June photo contest. The Library will be closed on Saturday May 31st for the Cow Chip Festival and Thursday June 19th in honor of Juneteenth. The Library will also be closing early at 6:00 on Monday June 9th due to Town Meeting.

HVAC work continues to progress on schedule at our new Library with NorthStar Refrigeration, Inc. hard at work installing floor grilles throughout the building and wall splits in the Program Room.

We are excited to announce that our new smartboard has arrived! We can't wait to unpack and install it and are extremely grateful to the Friends of the Dighton Public Library for funding its purchase.

Echoes of the Past, Visions for Tomorrow: The Story of Smith Memorial Hall

Join Historic Commission Chair Pat Gailes on Thursday June 26th at 6:30 at Old Town Hall as she discusses the history of the building that will soon be the Dighton Public Library's new home. For over 100 years, Smith Memorial Hall has been a part of Dighton's story, hosting church and community events. Come learn about the Smith Family's ties to the building and why it has held such a special place in the hearts of so many. Now, Smith Memorial Hall is starting its new chapter as the Library, and it will continue to serve the community in a whole new way.

Join the Traveling Book Group and travel around the world through books. This month, the book club will travel to Washington D.C. to uncover the Barclay family's secrets by reading House of Glass by Sarah Pekkanen for discussion on Wednesday June 25th in the Children's Section located in the Lower Level of the Town Hall at 6:00. Copies of books are available at the Library for anybody looking to take part. The Traveling Book Group meets on the last Wednesday of each month, and anybody interested is welcome to attend.

Tot Time Join Ms. Lorie Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:30 in June for songs, stories, and finger-plays for children between the ages of 18 months and 3 years.

Summer Programs and Activities

Summer Reading Begins June 24th! Children are invited to sign up for the Read to Bead program. They will get a chain with a tag of their choice plus they can pick out a colored bead for every 15 minutes they spend reading. For every five hours, children will earn a scratch ticket to win special prize. Every scratch ticket is a winner, so there are plenty of cool prizes available for everybody!

Monday Afternoon Craft Programs Stop by the Children's Section every Monday afternoon in July and August and enjoy a different activity. Each Monday throughout the summer beginning in July will feature a different activity, so check our calendar during the summer months so you do not miss any of these activities, including slime day, spray dye t-shirts, polymer clay crafts, and more.

Stories in the Park Join Miss Lorie for Stories in the Park every Wednesday at noon by the playground behind Town Hall beginning on July 9th. Families are invited to bring a picnic lunch and listen to stories while they eat.

Color of the Week Wear the color of the week to the Library during the summer months of July and August and pick out a lollipop. Visit the Children's Section, check our calendar, or call the Library at (508) 669-4421 for more information.

Wildlife Photo Contest: Begins June 1st
|
|
There is still time to enter a wildlife photograph in the June contest. E-mail your photograph to Ms. Lorie by June 1st to enter. The pictures will be laminated and then hung in our entry hallway. Each photo will be given a number so that everyone can vote for their favorite wildlife photo. Rules:- Include the name and age of the photographer.
- E-mail the picture so it can be printed as an 8x10.
- Each child can submit a wildlife photograph.
- Pictures must be submitted by June 1st.
- Voting will begin on June 1st and end on July 1st.
- You can vote every time you visit the Children's Section.
Prizes will be awarded to the winning Child's photo and Adult's photo!

Next Meeting The next meeting of the Friends of the Dighton Public Library will be on Thursday August 14th at 6:30 in the Library's Children's Section located in the lower level of Dighton Town Hall. All are welcome, and we always welcome new friends. All you really need to do is love the library and join us for a few meetings a year to help brainstorm and plan great events!

The Friends of the Dighton Public Library's Third Annual Golf Tournament will be on Sunday October 5th at Swansea Country Club. More details will follow in the summer months, so stay tuned for more details on this fundraiser.
