In just a few short days, February will be upon us, and the Dighton Public Library has plenty to offer throughout the month. February vacation promises a full slate of fun and engaging children's programs. Don't miss our candle craft activity or our spider web obstacle course in addition to the regularly scheduled activities Ms. Lorie plans for children throughout the month. When you stop by the Children's Section in February, don't forget to vote for your favorite pet photo as part of our month-long photo contest. Voting begins February 1st and is open to anybody visiting the Children's Section. Beyond children's programs, we have several dynamic programs covering a wide range of interests. Dr. Timothy Walker of UMASS Dartmouth will discuss the Underground Railroad in honor of Black History Month, and TherapyGardens will present on coffee and its history. February will also mark the start of our free community yoga program. Our six session program will run every Thursday from February 29th through April 4th, so be sure to register if you are interested in any or all of these yoga sessions. Don't forget that we will be closed in observance of President's Day on February 19th, but we will resume our regular operating hours the following day on February 20th.

Sailing to Freedom: Maritime Dimensions of the Underground Railroad
Join Dr. Tim Walker of UMASS Dartmouth at Old Town Hall on Saturday February 17th at 3:00 as he highlights and describes the less-understood maritime side of the Underground Railroad in honor of Black History Month. Professor Walker will contextualize how escapes were managed along the East Coast to safe harbor in northern cities. While stories of the Underground Railroad have focused almost exclusively on overland routes, Tim will expand our understanding of how many achieved freedom by sea and what that journey looked like for many African Americans.
