South Country Library
Weekly Update
August 24, 2020
Building community by sharing the wonders of learning, creating and connecting with one another.
Greetings South Country Community,

First thing's first: September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month! If you (or someone you know) live in the South Country School District and don't have a library card...well, what are you waiting for? Bring an ID with current address (such as a driver license) or a piece of recent mail to the library's Patron Services desk, and sign up! Note: For a parent/guardian to sign their child up for a library card, the child must be present.

Second, we have temporarily amended our unattended minors policy: The age that a minor may use the library without appropriate supervision has been raised from 10 years to 14, until the current health crisis concludes.

Now then, we’re going to be doing some Spring (err...late-summer) Cleaning here on the Update. After this edition, future Updates will have very little in the way of what you’ve seen under Staying Stable and Learning & Leisure. That’s right — aside from the occasional exception, we’re paring down to South Country Library-specific programs and resources.

If there’s any non-SC Library-related item below that you want to keep within easy reach, we highly suggest you save it to your Bookmarks/Favorites. Beyond that, we encourage you to follow our Facebook page, periodically visit our Coronavirus Resource page, and check in on the Bellport.com Village News (or sign up for their emails).

Also, we’re changing the delivery-day again (it’s the last time! …maybe!)  You can now look forward to the Update on Tuesday evenings, every other week. Our next edition will be on Tuesday, September 8.

“But then you won’t be the Weekly Update anymore!”

It’s true. We’ll have to come up with a new name. While we’re doing that, why don’t you scroll through this week’s offerings? There's twice the trivia for all who want to test their knowledge, teens get another great craft-game-movie combo, and there’s a very important announcement from the Children’s Department, so don’t miss it!

Staying Stable features crucial voting information, free school supplies, and reimbursement if you lost SNAP-purchased food from a power outage. There’s nothing new in Learning & Leisure this week (gasp!), but make sure to save what you might want to find later, because it won't be there next edition.

Isn't it strange how this notice of our minimalist intentions took up the most amount of space? Well, maybe we're just trying to eke out a little more before we tighten up. Speaking of, it's been a strange summer. We hope you found moments of sunny comfort and cool relief, and manage to eke out a little more summer for yourself before we say hello to autumn.

You'll hear from us after Labor Day...so Happy Labor Day!

STAYING STABLE

Election Day is Tuesday, November 3rd. If you are concerned about voting that day in regards to COVID-19, work schedule, or other issues, there are two other ways to cast your vote.
Early Voting
The Suffolk County Board of Elections has posted early voting details to ensure that voting can be spread out and diminish crowds on Election Day. Read the information sheet here, or visit Suffolk’s Early Voting webpage.

Voting via Absentee Ballot
Governor Cuomo signed legislation broadening the meaning of “Temporary illness” on Absentee Ballots to include risk of contracting or spreading COVID-19 (you do not have to have COVID-19, but only be concerned for your risk of catching it). You can request an Absentee Ballot by submitting an Absentee Ballot Application, which you can get at the library Reference Desk or download here: English/español. On the application, check “Temporary Illness or Physical Disability” as the reason in box 1. For more information on absentee voting, click here.

By the way...are you registered to vote? You can check your voter status here. If you need a voter registration form, please ask for one at the Reference Desk, or you can register online here.
