Make October a month of stories and art.

FROM THE DIRECTOR

Hi Readers!

In the age of digital distraction and fleeting trends, classic literature continues to hold a place for today’s reader. It offers not just stories but enduring insights into the human experience. Refreshing a collection as large as ours includes breathing new life into iconic works with newly published, bold redesigns of fresh releases from publishers. The appeal of classic literature lies in the timeless themes of love, ambition, identity – all things which still resonate today. These texts are still foundational in developing critical thinking skills, empathy, and historical awareness. They inspire countless adaptations to film, fashion, and even digital media. Reading classics is a kind of literary time travel. It is a chance to slow down and reflect in a world that rarely pauses. Discover or revisit the stories that have shaped the world by reading a classic book today.

Warm regards, Lisa Johnson

BOOK TALK:

Book Review: Wild Dark Shore

Five stars is simply not enough for this latest masterpiece by Charlotte McConaghy. Her writing is stunning and poetic, and like her first book, Migrations, Wild Dark Shore brings the future of our earth to the forefront of her story.

As the book opens, we are immediately immersed in the beauty and wildness of the remote island of Shearwater. Though fictional, it feels as real as the room I am sitting in now. The inhabitants and caretakers of this island are the Salt family: Dominic, a grieving widower whose devotion to Shearwater is surpassed only by his fierce love for his children;

Fen, his oldest, damaged and broken by a man she trusted; Raff, struggling to deal with the loss of his mother and the anger he strives to control; and nine-year-old Orly, tenderhearted and wise beyond his years. When the wreckage of a small ship reaches the island, a woman, battered and barely alive, is rescued, and the story that unfolds from this crucial event is unlike anything I have encountered.

Wild Dark Shore is literary fiction at its finest. I closed the book unwilling to let go of the characters I came to know and understand and weep for, yet grateful for the reminder that the human spirit is stronger than we realize, and that love, in its purest form, is really the only thing any of us truly need.    -Gail
