From the Director

Hi Readers,

The Orange City Public Library is pleased to announce that we have received a $3,000 grant from the Siouxland Community Foundation for a new outreach initiative, Books as Medicine. This project partners the library with the Orange City Health Clinic to bring the comfort, reassurance, and joy of reading books directly into healthcare settings.

As a pilot site for a larger community campaign, the Orange City Health Clinic will host a permanent, on-site book collection for children to enjoy during medical visits. The collection is designed to make time spent waiting or feeling anxious more comforting.

The pilot collection will include board books, picture books, and early readers featuring popular subjects, as well as titles that help children better understand medical settings. Topics will include visits to doctors, dentists, hospitals, veterinarians, animal care, and other related experiences. Each book will be labeled to recognize the support from the Orange City Public Library and the Siouxland Community Foundation. It will also include a QR code that connects
families to library resources and information on obtaining a library card.

The Books as Medicine initiative will expand to additional settings throughout the community. These include dentists’ offices, counseling practices, veterinary clinics, and other health care specialists. This phased approach allows the library to extend its reach far beyond the physical building and bring literacy into the everyday places that Sioux County residents already visit.

By integrating literacy into healthcare environments, the library reinforces its role as a champion for learning and well-being while offering meaningful moments of comfort when it is needed most.

Warm regards, Lisa Johnson

Summer Reading Challenge

Get ready to grow this summer with the Orange City Public Library’s Summer Reading Challenge! As part of our “Plant a Seed, Read” theme, we’re inviting readers of all ages to dig into books, build new skills, and have a little fun along the way.

We’ve designed reading logs for every stage of life, from birth through adulthood. Our youngest participants (birth–age 2) will

enjoy a mix of reading and simple, engaging language-building activities to  nurture early literacy skills. Older kids, teens, and adults each have their own tailored logs to keep reading goals fun and achievable all summer long.

As you complete your log, you can earn prizes like books and treats—and even better, you’ll collect entries for some exciting grand prizes! Curious what you could win? Pick up your reading log at the library or grab one at our Summer Reading Kick-Off Carnival on June 1 from 6:00–8:00 pm in Windmill Park.

Reading over the summer isn’t just fun—it’s important. For kids especially, keeping up with reading helps prevent the “summer slide,” where learning can slip during the break from school. But the benefits don’t stop there—reading boosts imagination, reduces stress, and keeps minds sharp at every age.

So whether you’re planting the seeds of literacy in a little one or growing your own reading habit, we hope you’ll join us for a summer full of stories, discovery, and community.
