Hi Readers!
As students head back to school, the Orange City Public Library invites families to make the library part of their fall routine. September’s calendar is packed with programs that spark creativity, build literacy, and foster community connection.
Young learners can move and groove at Sensory Story Time and dive into tales during Preschool Story Time. On September 16, the library will host Art Classes for 3–5-year-olds, encouraging self-expression and fine motor skills. School-age children can explore STEM and play at LEGO Club (Sept. 19), Dominoes (Sept. 26), and Maker Space (Oct. 3). Teens can celebrate their favorite wizarding world at the Harry Potter Party on September 23.
Adults can join the English Conversation Class on Monday evenings or relax with Pizza, Puzzles, & Pitchers on September 19. Book lovers can connect at the Introvert Book Club on September 30.
The library is here to support learning, creativity, and connection all school year long. Visit orangecitylibrary.org/events for details and registration.

BOOK TALK:

Book Review: I See You’ve Called in Dead

Bud Stanley has a good life — at least at first glance. He loves his job writing obituaries for a New York City newspaper. He’s happily married to Jen, the love of his life who laughs at his jokes and always holds his hand. They’re expecting a child and couldn’t be happier. But when Jen suffers a miscarriage, everything changes. She stops laughing, stops holding his hand, and eventually leaves him for an Englishman she once dated. Even after the divorce, Bud clings to hope for reconciliation, but the reality is far from kind.

Dating proves to be a disaster. His first blind date

brings along her ex-boyfriend — a sure sign things won’t go smoothly. From there, Bud’s life spirals downward. He drinks too much, sleeps too late, and wallows in self-pity. In a drunken haze, he writes his own obituary — embellishing the truth — and accidentally posts it on the newspaper’s website. Unable to delete it, he’s suspended pending an investigation. Ironically, the company software now lists him as deceased, and you can’t fire a dead man.

During his suspension, Bud is forced to confront his life. Much of his time is spent with his best friend and landlord, Tim. Their banter is sharp, funny, and heartfelt, painting a vivid picture of what true friendship looks like.

Things take another turn when Bud attends the wake of his former mother-in-law, where he faces Jen and her new husband. Overwhelmed, he steps outside and meets Clara — a young woman with her own painful past, who attends funerals of strangers as a way of coping. She invites Bud to join her at another service later in the week. What begins as an unlikely meeting blossoms into a unique and deeply moving relationship.

This novel will make you both laugh and cry. Through colorful chapters, readers get to know not just Bud, but also his lively neighbors — including Leo, a remarkable 7-year-old boy. The author skillfully pulls you into the characters’ lives, making their struggles and triumphs feel real. We can all see ourselves in Bud’s journey: heartbreak, loss, mistakes, and the search for meaning.

I highly recommend I See You’ve Called in Dead. It’s a touching, witty, and relatable read that will resonate with anyone who has ever faced life’s unexpected detours.      -Submitted by Bill
