BOOK TALK:
The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis |
I distinctly remember reading C. S. Lewis’s The Last Battle on my family’s old sofa, staying up into the wee hours of the morning, and quietly crying as I finished the final chapter knowing that I, like the Pevensies, would not reenter Narnia

for new adventures at the conclusion of this book. Years after that night, I remember having a conversation with a friend about the order in which the series “should” be read, the original publication order, or the chronological order. This conversation happened all over again when we recently purchased new copies of The Chronicles of Narnia for the library.
When I first read the series, I read them in publication order, which starts with The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. However, since 1994, the books have been published in chronological order, placing The Magician’s Nephew as the first in the series. The decision to swap the order of the books has been hotly debated by fans of Lewis, some going so far as to claim that it detracts from Lewis’ original intent for the story. Douglas Gresham, C.S. Lewis’s stepson, said he had asked Lewis which order he thought the books should be read, to which Lewis replied they should be read chronologically (MacCorkle, 2022). However, in a letter to a young fan in 1957, Lewis wrote “perhaps it does not matter very much which order anyone read them.”
As for myself, I think when I go to dust off and reread my old editions of Narnia, I think I am inclined to agree with Lewis’s letter. Rather than focusing on which order to read them, gleaning the messages, themes, and enjoying the story are at the forefront of my brain. Please stop on by the library and check out our new copies, and immerse yourself in the world of Narnia, which is what Lewis would probably care most about. -Submitted by Victoria Brander, Staff |
