Dear Readers!
You are all invited to “Level Up” your summer with the Orange City Public Library Summer Reading Program. The program runs from June 2 to July 11. Reading powers up the imagination and our upcoming activities and events are a “Level Up” experience for all ages. The program kicks off with Bubble Stations in Windmill Park on June 2 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.—a fun-filled evening for the whole family. Throughout the summer, the library will host story times, crafts, animal encounters, food workshops, and even science experiments. Readers will track their reading to earn entries for exciting prizes. Whether you’re a young reader or a lifelong learner, there’s something for everyone. BOOK TALK:
Book Review: The Briar Club | |
This latest novel by Kate Quinn, The Briar Club, is not only an engaging read, it is an absolutely delicious slice of Americana. Set in Washington DC during the post WWII years, the story invites us into a boarding house for women, Briarwood House, and introduces us to a fascinating cast of characters. As a sisterhood of sorts is formed among the women boarders, we walk alongside each one, discovering secrets they keep carefully hidden. But the biggest secret of all is the one that holds readers in suspense throughout the entire book: who are the two characters murdered on Thanksgiving Day, 1954? And who is the killer?
Adding to the intriguing plot and memorable characters is the backdrop of 1950s America which colors the story with so many historic and cultural details—most notably Joseph McCarthy's Red Scare and the country's obsessive fear of communism. We experience the world of women's professional baseball, Washington social life, politics, popular music, classic television, fashion—even recipes and a Betty Crocker Bake-Off. It is all of these elements combined that kept me reading late into the night, making The Briar Club a 5 star read and a book I will continue to recommend. -Submitted by Gail
