BOOK TALK:
Book Review: The Frozen River | |
"The Frozen River" is the kind of book you sink into immediately. Ariel Lawhon takes us through six months of midwifery, murder, rape, and retribution during a frigid winter on Maine's Kennebec River. Set in the late 1700s, the story is a compelling blend of historical fiction and mystery, beginning with the discovery of a frozen body. I especially loved the character of real life Martha Ballard, a fierce, independent woman whose skill as a midwife is undisputed -- except by the newly arrived Harvard educated doctor whose ineptness and arrogance is infuriating and destructive. Martha herself is wise and outspoken, unrelenting in her determination to

bring justice to the men who have used their power to bring extreme harm to the women of their community. As with every book I complete, I take time to read the afterword by the author. It was interesting to learn how the idea for this story came about -- and especially that the diary entries included are Martha's own. Often times, newly released novels do not measure up to the hype. Not so with "The Frozen River". This is one I highly recommend. -Gail
