BOOK TALK:
It’s Never Too Late to Become a Reader | |
|
|
The room was buzzing with excitement and packed with avid fans who had come to the annual Tucson Festival of Books to see and hear their favorite authors speak. The session my husband and I had just attended held great meaning for both of us. In fact, we were still in a state of disbelief that we were actually in the same room with

our literary heroes. After making our way through the crowd, I stood by as Rusty approached Craig Johnson, author of the well-known Longmire series, and shook his hand. His words brought me to tears. “Thank you for making me a reader.”
Rusty and I have many things in common, but for most of our 50 years of marriage, reading was not one of them. As an avid outdoorsman, Rusty paged through hunting and fishing magazines while I kept a teetering stack of books on our coffee table. As a former English teacher and current member of the Orange City Library staff – (best retirement job ever!) – I have always believed in the power of putting the right book into the right hands. For years, I secretly hoped that Rusty would someday share my love of reading, but hope was running out. And then, along came Joe Pickett. One day at work, I grabbed the first book in C.J. Box’s popular series, said a little prayer that main character, Joe, a DNR game warden, would work his magic, and placed it in Rusty’s hands. Boom. Rusty devoured the series, moved on to Craig Johnson’s Walt Longmire, and the rest is history. The flood gates had opened.

After shaking hands with Craig Johnson on that sunny March day, we followed the crowd out the door, searching for the authors’ signing booth. We had one more person to meet. Up ahead, we spotted a smiling, rugged man in a black cowboy hat, sitting at a table behind a long line of waiting fans. And once again, I stood teary-eyed as Rusty reached out to shake the hand of C.J. Box. “Thank you for making me a reader.”

These days, at our home, the magazines are collecting dust, the coffee table stacks are growing, and Rusty’s current count of books he has read since that Joe Pickett day 5 years ago stands at 164. Incredible but true. And the moral of the story? That’s easy. There’s no timeline when it comes to falling in love with a good book. And it’s never ever too late to become a reader. -Submitted by Gail
