Library Book Bike

The Orange City Public Library's book bike will provide a new way for us to connect with the community outside of our physical walls. We're envisioning story times around town, visits to the Farmer's Market, deliveries to retirement communities, and other pop-up adventures.

The ebike was custom ordered from Icicle

Tricycles, a company that builds cargo bikes for use around the world. Staff member Amy Nonhof designed the wrap that surrounds the front cargo box. It pays homage to Orange City's Dutch store fronts, the Tulip Festival, and of course books!

The cargo box features bookshelves and a chalkboard with pamphlet holders, along with a fold-down counter and holsters for an umbrella. Last but not least, the e-assist feature will help  us power through with heavy loads and up hills.

We want to thank the community and the local Kiwanis Club for their financial support towards the bike. Funds from past book sales went towards the purchase and Kiwanis donated $1,300 for safety equipment and accessories.

The library is excited to debut our new book bike during Tulip Festival. Watch for us in Thursday afternoon's parade and at our story time near the shelter at Windmill Park.

Survey Reminder

We are still collecting survey results to help us develop and plan programs and  events for the community to attend, learn from, and enjoy. If you have not already filled out the survey please take the opportunity to do so now. Your feedback is important to us, so upon your completion of the survey your name will be put into a drawing for a $25 gift card. Responses will be accepted until June 1. Households with multiple age groups may complete the survey once for each age group applicable.

Book Talk:

"More Than Enough" by Anna Quindlen

Oh, how I love a good character novel, and Anna Quindlen has delivered once again. This time we are invited into the life of Polly Goodman, a high school English teacher whose life is fraught with the kinds of challenges so many of us must face: family issues, broken relationships, and infertility. We walk beside Polly as she navigates each of these —sometimes with grace, but often with the angst of regret and worry.

Anna Quindlen's gift for characterization is remarkable. We recognize each person in Polly's circle as someone we too have encountered: a distant mother, a close friend, a failing father. Best

More Than Enough by Anna Quindlen

of all, a husband whose effortless love keeps Polly grounded. As the story evolves, Polly's circle widens, and her search for truth brings the past and future together in a beautiful collision.

I loved this book. I loved the way the story unfolded slowly and the feeling of being present in the daily lives of these flesh and blood characters. For me, a book like this is the perfect example of why I read.
