Hello!
This summer passed much too quickly for our liking. Care to join us in postponing fall? September in Maine is so beautiful that we could probably extend summertime a bit. Speaking of extending, we're adding back Tuesday evening hours starting September 7. Our new (old) Tuesday hours mean that we'll now be open until 7:00 PM, so tell your friends and stop by! Fingers crossed, we'll add even more hours in the next couple months. We are also resuming in-person events this fall, with two author talks scheduled in September. In order to do this, we need to be especially strict about requiring masks within the Library. This allows us to have a safe environment to welcome presenters, and ensures all attendees feel comfortable sitting together. There may be a little more space between seats this fall, but we're just happy to invite you in! Happy Library Card Sign-up Month! Did you know there are more public libraries in the United States than there are Starbucks? And that Americans go to public libraries more often than they go to the movies? (Even more now, thanks COVID!) With your library card, you have access to more than 6 MILLION books, audiobooks, magazines, DVDs, and downloadable audiobooks and eBooks through Maine's Minerva Consortium. Knowledge is power, and studies show that students’ academic success is linked to library usage, including improved student retention and an enhanced academic experience... something to keep in mind as another school year begins. But library cards are for everyone - so if you don't have one, come see us! Warmly, York Public Library

AUTHOR TALK The Field House: A Writer's Life Lost and Found on an Island in Maine Tuesday, September 21 @ 6:30 PM York Public Library (Community Room) Born of illustrious New England stock, Rachel Field was an award-winning writer in the early twentieth century. Her light was abruptly extinguished at the age of forty-seven, when she died at the pinnacle of her personal happiness and professional acclaim. Fifty years later, author Robin Clifford Wood stepped onto the sagging floorboards of Rachel’s long-neglected home on the rugged shores of an island in Maine and began dredging up Rachel’s history. (Excerpted from publisher marketing.) Join us for what will surely be an inspiring presentation about Rachel Field and the power of the written word. Authors and authors-to-be are encouraged to attend. ROBIN CLIFFORD WOOD is a columnist, biographer, memoirist, poet, blogger, and teacher.

The Bridge is Fixed!
After months of coordination of civil engineers, contractors, and metal fabricators, the bridge between the lower lot of YPL and Bagel Basket has been repaired. Special thanks to Library Trustee and longtime co-chair of the Building and Grounds Committee, Pete Smith, without whom the bridge or Library would be complete.

Say Goodbye to our Wonderful Youth Services' Clerks
We've been so lucky to have Lindsey and Amelia over the past two years in their support roles in our Youth Services department. We are sad to see them go, but wish them well in their college journeys. Whether it be creative window displays in the Children's room or an all-ages tie-dye program, they've inspired us in so many ways.

Author Talk Thursday, October 7 6:30 PM Join us in welcoming debut author Caitlin Wahrer. Set in a fictional town in southern Maine, The Damage is equal parts family drama, crime story, and moral thriller. In it, a New England family is torn apart when the husband’s much-loved younger brother accuses a man he’s just met of sexual assault. It's a page-turner that library staff could not put down. If that's not enough--Stephen King wrote it "pulled me in from the first page...put this one high on your summer list."
