July 2025

Happy July!

Hopefully your summer fun is well underway, whatever that looks like for you. Time off, beach days, bike rides, vacation-worthy page-turners. Puzzles. Naps. Slip 'n slides. And of course, barbecues. Do you have a tried and true cookout recipe? Maybe a signature pasta salad? Tell us! We might include it in our next eNewsletter.

Whatever your plans, remember, you can always keep cool at the library, where we not only have AC, but a 100% track record of finding something fun for you or your loved ones to do, read, or explore.

This month in programs: we're taking on a familiar archnemesis... the tick. The University of Maine’s Tick Lab reports that in 2024, 68% of blacklegged ticks submitted by homeowners were encountered on their own properties while gardening, doing yard work, or simply playing outside. Find out how you can protect yourself on July 8.

We're also shelling out some fun crafts. Our puzzle tournament returns. And it's almost that time of year when our lower parking lot is the most popular place on campus: Touch a Truck returns Saturday, July 19 as we celebrate the final days of the Summer Challenge. We hope you'll join us!

-YPL

P.S. Need a summer read? Our featured display upstairs is BEACH READS.

P.P.S Our Summer Challenge count is up to 629 people so far! Make us the happiest librarians in the world and sign up? We're on a mission to beat last year's record of 709 participants!

ICYMI: York Public Library Receives ALA Grant for “Digital Learning Lab” to Benefit Students with Disabilities

We are proud to announce that we have received grant funding to create a DIGITAL LEARNING LAB to benefit special needs students in our community. We received the grant—one of 300 libraries nationwide to be selected—from the American Library Association's Libraries Transforming Communities initiative, which provides community engagement and accessibility resources to small and rural libraries to help them better serve people with disabilities.

The $10,000 grant will help establish a Digital Learning Lab at YPL—the first of its kind in Maine. The Lab will offer a welcoming, inclusive space where students can explore creative digital tools like graphic design, digital photography, virtual reality, podcast production, and coding. Through hands-on workshops and independent exploration, students will build confidence in creative expression while developing valuable digital skills.

We are seeking input from middle and high school students with disabilities to shape this initiative. Know a student who could share their thoughts with us? Please contact Devin, our Technology and Reference Librarian, to schedule a private, confidential meeting either in person or via zoom: 207-363-2818 ext. 1019 or dburritt@yorkpubliclibrary.org.
