Where can you get a costume, hear from a paranormal investigator, marvel at the stars, and enjoy a soothing clarinet performance? York Public Library, that's where!
We have everything you need to get into the spooky season. The costume closet is fully stocked and ready for anyone looking for a Halloween look. Last year we helped 112 people of all ages find a costume! Add to, or shop at, the closet all month long in the Children's Room.
October is Membership Month at the Library. Did you know we are not a town department, but an independent 501c3 nonprofit organizaton? We receive a portion of our funding from the town, but Member support helps make up the difference in our budget. Please consider a Supporting Membership donation in any amount. We really appreciate it - and thank you.
If you hadn't heard, the recent nor'easter put a damper on our Lighthouses and Legends party plans and we had to reschedule. But the good news is you have another week to get tickets! The new date is October 11 from 4-6PM. We hope you can join us at the stunning Viewpoint Hotel with our new special guest.... Scroll on to find out who it is!
Coming up this weekend is our 4th Annual Dan Bancroft Memorial Lecture. Prepare to feel inspired as we hear from Dr. Rachael V. Cobb who specializes in American politics, voting rights, election administration, and political participation. Not to be missed, and you can still register to attend. Stick around after the talk for a reception.
We hope to see you soon! -YPL |

Lighthouses and Legends Rescheduled to October 11 with New Special Guest, Matt Rosenberg, Nubble Lighthouse Keeper
|
Lighthouses & Legends has been rescheduled to Sunday, October 11, from 4–6 PM due to the nor’easter winds that hit the York coast on September 27. We’re looking forward to gathering with you under somewhat calmer skies! Tickets are available!
Due to the scheduling change, our guest speaker Micah Johnson is no longer able to attend, but we are happy to share that Nubble Lighthouse Keeper Matt Rosenberg will join us instead and regale us with tales of caring for York's iconic lighthouse.
Join us at ViewPoint Hotel for an evening of ocean views, food and drinks, music, conversation, and a celebration of York Public Library’s 25 years in our current building. Tickets are $75 per person and include two drink tickets.
About the speaker: Matt Rosenberg has served as the Nubble Lighthouse Keeper since 2012, balancing this unusual calling with his day job teaching English at York High School. From spring through fall, he rows across roughly 100 yards of often-choppy water to Nubble Island, where he helps care for the lighthouse, keeper’s house, and grounds. He also shares his unique view of the iconic Nubble Light through photography and social media, giving people around the world a glimpse of life at one of Maine’s most beloved landmarks. A resident of Wells, Matt says being the keeper is his favorite job—and a special way to connect with the long history of those who have cared for the light. |

New: CODE CLUB! |
We have an exciting new addition to our Digital Learning Lab program series: Code Club is a hands-on opportunity coming in early November for students in grades 3-6 to learn computer programming. Working with colorful, easy-to-use blocks, students will learn the basics of programming while creating their own interactive projects. They might build a racing game, design an animation, create a musical instrument, tell an interactive story, or turn their ideas into digital art.
No coding experience is required. Code Club is designed for beginners and experienced young creators alike, encouraging students to experiment, solve problems, and learn by making.
The program is being offered in partnership with the Raspberry Pi Foundation and software engineer Mike Harvey, who works with the Foundation on Blockly, a visual programming tool that helps people learn to code using colorful blocks. Harvey has also worked for many years with young people as a technology and computer science teacher, special educator, and outdoor educator.
The Digital Learning Lab at York Public Library offers an inclusive space where students can explore creative digital tools like graphic design, digital photography, virtual reality, podcast production, robotics, coding, and more. Through hands-on workshops and independent exploration, students will build confidence in creative expression while developing valuable digital skills.
York Public Library's Digital Learning Lab was established in 2025 with funding from the American Library Association's Libraries Transforming Communities grant as well Southern Maine Planning & Development Commission's Digital Device subgrant. |
