Colin Woodard to Speak at YPL on September 20 in 3rd Annual Bancroft Memorial Lecture |
York Public Library is pleased to present our 3rd Annual Bancroft Lecture Series event: U.S. Democracy in Crisis: How we got here and what we can do about it with noted journalist, historian, and Pulitzer Prize finalist Colin Woodard.
The United States is facing a period of significant political transformation that many view as a test of the nation's democratic foundations. Woodard will reveal America's structural and historical vulnerabilities that enabled this shift, the role of regional cultures in enabling it, and how a shared national purpose can play a decisive role in turning the tide.
Colin Woodard is a New York Times bestselling historian and Polk Award-winning journalist recognized as one of the most respected authorities on North American regionalism, U.S. nationhood, and how America's colonial past shapes its present and future.
The lecture takes place Saturday, September 20th at 4PM, followed by a reception. Registration for the event opens September 2 at noon. Funded by The Dan Bancroft Memorial Endowment for Civic Leadership and Engagement at York Public Library. |

YORKWISE Grant Brings New Life to Teen Room
|
The new academic year is just hours away, and young adults headed to the library after school will have an improved space to hang out, thanks to a room update made possible by YORKWISE.
The updates, funded by the community-based nonprofit dedicated to promoting drug and alcohol prevention and education for youth and families in York, include virtually indestructible sustainably-sourced flooring, sound panels, cabinets, a work table, and a librarian's desk.
In funding this room refresh, YORKWISE has helped us provide a space worthy of our middle and high school-aged visitors. And, crucially, this support helps us show our young adults that they matter in a world where they can sometimes feel overlooked.
In August, YORKWISE Board members and YPL librarians celebrated with an official ribbon cutting ceremony. Scroll down to the Teen section of this newsletter to see a photo of the room, and keep a lookout for our official press release. Better yet, come check it out in person in the Library's lower level. We love to show off the new and improved space!
We hope all our visitors and cardholders will join us in saying THANK YOU to the incredible folks at YORKWISE. How lucky we are to have such a great organization working to make life better for York's youth and families!

New Fall Art Exhibit: Dustan Knight Creative Joy |
“This exhibition showcases forty years of my life making art and living a creative life. I work in several styles that I return to continuously — ambiguous narratives inspired by overheard snippets of life, abstract landscapes that express my experiences in nature, and playful works that explore themes of chaos, humor, and joy. Artists rarely fit into just one box, and this show offers a window into the breadth of what it means to sustain a creative journey over time.” - Artist Dustan Knight.
Creative Joy offers a lively, diverse, and deeply personal view of Knight’s artistic evolution. From narrative scenes to lyrical abstractions, the show celebrates the vitality of a career dedicated to seeing—and making—with curiosity and joy.
A reception with the artist is scheduled for Tuesday, September 16, 5:00-7:00 PM in the Library’s Upper Level. |

Thank you, YORKWISE!
Recently, the Teen Room at YPL got a significant facelift, due to the generosity of YORKWISE. This grant allowed our Youth Services team to acquire beautiful new flooring, sound panels, cabinets, a desk, and a bookshelf! Our teen patrons will come back from summer break to a room that feels brand new! With this grant, Teen Librarian Danie was gifted a tremendous helping hand in working with the 7th-12th graders who frequent the Library after school.
PHOTO: On August 8th, we revealed the newly refreshed space and joined YORKWISE Board members for a celebratory ribbon cutting.
