Lighthouses and Legends is an evening of stunning ocean views, delicious food and drinks, lively conversation and music, and a shared celebration of York Public Library. Micah Johnson is an American charcoal artist working from a seaside studio in York, Maine. A former Major League Baseball player (Chicago White Sox, Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers) who retired in 2018 following a bipolar disorder diagnosis, he has since built a body of work in charcoal, large-format painting, and public sculpture — exhibited at Christie’s, Bonhams, Art Basel Miami, and on the cover of Time Magazine. 

His most public-facing work is Aku, a 3D-animated Black boy wearing an oversized astronaut helmet whose middle-grade novel debuted at #6 on the New York Times Bestseller List. Inspired by a young boy who asked whether astronauts could be Black, Johnson began creating evocative artwork depicting African American children in space helmets—a powerful symbol of limitless potential. Aku: Journey to Ibra, Aku’s origin story, is Johnson’s first book. He lives in Maine with his wife and daughters.

York Public Library is pleased to present our 4th annual Bancroft Lecture Series event, Ordinary Citizens, Extraordinary Change: How Citizens Unite to Improve their Communities with Dr. Rachael V. Cobb.

Cobb, an Associate Professor of Political Science at Suffolk University, specializes in American politics, particularly voting rights, election administration, and political participation. 

Dr. Cobb co-chairs the university-wide Suffolk Votes committee, which is dedicated to non-partisan voter mobilization and education. Additionally, she serves on the city of Boston’s Mayor’s Election Advisory Committee and the board of the nonpartisan nonprofit MassVOTE. 

Since 2006, she has collaborated with the City of Boston to recruit students as poll workers. Dr. Cobb has also worked with the United States Election Assistance Commission to update their college poll worker guidance. 

Dr. Cobb received her Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and her A.B. from Bryn Mawr College.

York Public Library presents Humankind & Technology: A Journey Through History, a three-part series led by York historian James Kences exploring the profound impact of technological innovation on human civilization. Beginning with artificial intelligence, the internet, and other modern technologies, the series works backward through history to examine the transformative developments of the Middle Ages, metallurgy, and ultimately the earliest technologies of the Stone Age. Across three sessions on September 9, 16, and 23 at 11:00 AM, Kences will explore how technological advances have shaped societies, economies, warfare, communication, and everyday life—and how innovations from thousands and even millions of years ago continue to influence the world we know today.  

Collage Connections features the vibrant and imaginative work of collage artists Linda Payne-Sylvester and Susan Victoria Fried. On view September 2 through October 30 in the Library’s Upper Level, the exhibition explores the surprising connections between their work through color, spontaneity, whimsy, music, fashion, and personal memories.

Both artists bring together an eclectic mix of materials, textures, imagery, and text to create playful and expressive compositions. Payne-Sylvester draws on her background in photography, graphic design, and printmaking, transforming her photographs and art prints into colorful mixed-media collages inspired in part by her love of gardening. Fried combines paper, paint, fabric, found objects, and handmade papers to create fantastical arrangements filled with wit, romance, and unexpected juxtapositions.

Meet the artists at the opening reception on Tuesday, September 9, from 5:00–6:30 p.m. in the Library’s Upper Level. Enjoy light refreshments, view the exhibition, and hear from Payne-Sylvester and Fried about their creative processes and inspirations.
