Summary

When middle school mishaps happen, five friends form the S.M.A.R.T. Squad and use their collective skills and the power of science to bring order to their school.

A crowded new school and a crazy class schedule is enough to make Izzy feel dizzy. It may be the first day of middle school, but as long as her best friends Allie Einstein and Charlie Darwin are by her side, Izzy knows it'll all be okay. However, first-day jitters take an icy turn when Izzy's old pal Marie Curie comes back to town. Instead of a warm welcome, Marie gives her former pal the cold shoulder. The problems pile up when the school's air-conditioning goes on the fritz and the temperature suddenly drops to near freezing. The adults don't seem to have a clue how to thaw out the school. Cold temperatures and a frigid friendship? Izzy has had enough of feeling like an absolute zero. She rallies the girls to use their brainpower and science smarts to tackle the school's chilly mystery ... and hopefully to fix a certain frozen friendship along the way. Will the girls succeed and become the heroes of Atom Middle School?

Author Notes

Valerie Tripp graduated with honors from the first coeducational class at Yale University in 1973. She received a Masters of Education from Harvard University in 1981. From 1974 to 1980, she was a writer for the Addison-Wesley Reading Program. She then became a freelance writer for The Hampton-Brown Company and ELHI Publishers Services creating educational materials for major publishers.

In 1983, Tripp and Pleasant Rowland decided to write a series of books about girls growing up all over the country during some of the most historical events of the past. Rowland envisioned the books as one of the cornerstones of a new company she had just founded called the Pleasant Co. Tripp's first assignment for Pleasant Co. was writing four of the six books about Samantha, a girl in turn-of-the-century America. Tripp then wrote about Felicity, Molly, and Josephina for the American Girls series. Her other works include the Hopscotch Hill School series.

Izzy Newton is anxious about starting middle school, but with a little help from her good friends, she conquers her fears. Izzy's best friends, pretty Charlie Darwin and adventurous Allie Einstein, are loyal and supportive, but Izzy doesn't know what to think when she learns that Marie Curie, a former member of the trio's circle of friends, is back from a year in Paris during which they fell out of touch. Izzy hopes to win Marie's friendship back, but Marie is cold to them on the first day of school. The school building is cold too--the air-conditioning system is malfunctioning, making the school like a refrigerator inside. Izzy convinces her friends to help solve the mystery behind this, partly hoping that if the STEM club she's proposed doesn't draw Marie to them, this will. They are all passionate about science, and they form several hypotheses and do observations, but it isn't until they resolve things with Marie that their efforts are successful. This series opener highlights diverse, sympathetic characters using their smarts and their emotional intelligence to solve scientific and social challenges. Charlie has light-brown skin and speaks Spanish with her two moms, Allie presents white, Marie presents Asian, and new girl Gina Carver is black; Izzy is a winning black protagonist who steadily challenges herself and nurtures her friendships. Bowers' half- and full-page grayscale illustrations add personality to the characters. Backmatter offers further information on the characters' real-life inspirations and women scientists.
