Volunteer Opportunities

March and April Opportunities: 

Registration begins on Friday, March 1 at 9:00 a.m. and is for East Islip patrons only.  Please call or visit the library to register for the following four programs.  

Spring Bunnies Story/Craft Volunteers (EIY761): Friday, March 22, 3:45-4:45 p.m. Assist children with a bunny craft. Earn one (1) hour of community service. 

Block-a-palooza (EIY917): Thursday, March 28, 2:45-4:15 p.m. Assist children with building structures made of legos, blocks, and more! Earn one and a half (1.5) hours of community service.

Super Movie & Game Night (EIY762): Thursday, March 28, 5:45-8:15 p.m. Help out with a Mario movie night packed with snacks and games! Earn two and a half (2.5) hours of community service.

Weird But True Volunteers (EIY763): Monday, April 1, 5:15 - 6:45 p.m. Help children decipher what is fact and what is fiction! Earn one and a half (1.5) hours of community service. 

Folktale Friday Volunteers (EIY764): Friday, April 5, 3:45 - 4:45 p.m. Assist children with a folktale related craft. Earn one (1) hour of community service. 

Authors Unlimited at St. Joseph's University: Saturday, April 13, 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. See www.authorsunlimited.org for more information and registration links. Earn three (3) hours of service. 

Toy Paramedics (EIY857): Thursday, April 25, 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. Help keep the toys in the Children's room in tip top shape. Earn one (1) hour of community service. 

We All Scream for Ice Cream (EIY765): Thursday, April 25, 2:45 p.m.-4 p.m. Assist children with this fun and tasty craft. Earn one and a quarter (1.25) hours of community service. 

Spring Fling (EIY766): Saturday, May 4, 10:15 AM-12:30 PM. Help us kick off the annual reopening of our Discovery Backyard! Earn two and a quarter (2.25) hours of community service. 

Spring Flags Volunteer (EIY767): Tuesday, May 7, 6:45 p.m.-8:15 p.m. Help children create a spring flag to hang in their home. Earn one and a half (1.5) hours of community service

Book Reviews
Earn community service hours for reviewing a you
ng adult book!

  • For East Islip Public Library cardholders in grades 7-12
  • Read the Book Review Guidelines here and submit a title for approval here
  • Once approved, write your review and email your finished document to teens@eipl.org 
  • You can earn three (3) hours of community service per book, up to nine (9) hours per month
  • Not sure of a book to review?  The American Library Association has tons of Young Adult book recommendations.  You can view them here.  

Kindness Rocks
Paint or draw designs and hopeful, inspirational words on to rocks you find in your yard. Place rocks where people might see them around the neighborhood or on nature trails.

  • For East Islip Public Library cardholders in grades 7-12
  • To receive credit you must take and submit photos of the four rocks you have placed around your neighborhood. Please be mindful of the background of your photos and avoid including any personal identification information in the shot (license plates, house numbers, etc.)
  • You will receive a maximum of one (1) hour of community service for the 4 decorated rocks and accompanying photos
  • Please submit photos to teens@eipl.org with the subject line: "KINDNESS ROCKS".  Please include your photos, your full name, library card barcode, phone number, and grade.

The shelter serves the community by teaching and practicing humane behavior toward man and all living things. Save-A-Pet accepts students ages 16+ into their regular volunteer activities, but also has a Jr. Volunteer program for kids 16 years-old and younger.

Please note: If you are submitting a review for a community service requirement such as National Honor Society, religion, or for college applications, please submit well in advance of your deadline.  We cannot guarantee that reviews or community service material will be read the night before required hours are due.  Letters and/or certificates are typically sent out within three to five business days after submission.
