March is National Women's History Month

Women’s History Month started in 1978 in Sonoma County as a week centered around International Women’s Day (March 8). Since then, it has grown in size and duration. Starting in 1995, presidents have issued a series of annual proclamations designating March as "Women's History Month" to recognize the contributions women have made to America throughout history.

This year’s theme is Valiant Women of the Vote: Refusing to be Silent. It continues to celebrate 100 years since the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote.

The Library of Congress has a virtual exhibit about women who fought for the vote. Explore other virtual exhibits and collections that celebrate Women’s History Month, from arts & design, culture & folklife and historical places.

Browse these booklists about Trailblazing Women, Women's History Month and an eBooklist from Overdrive, or enjoy films directed by women on Kanopy. Check out this blog, which has some interesting facts about women in history.
